Louise
Eric Clapton and Yardbirds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Chorus:]
Oh Louise, yes you're the sweetest girl I know.
Don't you know now Louise, you are the sweetest girl that I know.
You made me run from Chicago
Oh, to the Gulf of Mexico.

Now you know Louise,
She's like a rolling stone.
Every time she leave a man,
He has to grieve alone.

Oh Louise, why don't you hurry home?
You know, I never had no good loving,
Oh Louise, since you've been gone.

Got a girl called Mamie,
Treat me nice and kind.
I don't care what she do
Because Louise is on my mind.

[Chorus]

Louise ain't so good looking
And her hair ain't red,
But she cooks my breakfast
And I bring it to my bed.

[Chorus]

Oh Louise, why don't you hurry home?
Oh Louise, why don't you hurry home?

You made me run from Chicago
Oh, to the Gulf of Mexico.

Overall Meaning

The song "Louise" by Eric Clapton is an ode to a woman named Louise, who is described as the sweetest girl that the singer knows. Clapton sings of how Louise made him run from Chicago to the Gulf of Mexico, implying that she has a powerful hold over him. He compares Louise to a "rolling stone" who leaves men behind and makes them grieve alone. The chorus repeats the sentiment that Louise is the sweetest girl that the singer knows and he longs for her return.

Despite not being traditionally attractive, Clapton sings of how Louise cooks his breakfast and brings it to his bed, suggesting that her domestic abilities are a large part of her appeal to him. He even admits to having another woman, Mamie, who treats him well, but still cannot compare to the alluring Louise. Overall, the song is a testament to the enduring power that some people hold over us, even when they're absent.

There’s No other Group that can say they had 3 of the greatest guitarists ever.

@paulbcote

Mayall's Blues Breakers? 🙂

@a.m8878

The stones had Two of the closest 15 best guitar players. Mick taylor on the solos is second only to Page or Cream Eric. And nobody beats Keith at in reef mastering and attitude.

@MyGodzilla99

Allman bros?

@christianwilson5643

@MyGodzilla99 hahah no not the Allman brothers

@donjaysmith6170

@Paul Cote Definitely John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. He had Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor and later Walter Trout and Carolyn Wonderland. Peter Green went on to found Fleetwood Mac and is considered to be the greatest blues guitarist ever from Great Britain. Mick Taylor joined the Rolling Stones in 1969. Walter Trout most recently had the #1 Blues Album on the charts for 2022 and Carolyn is the newest incredible guitarist who will be a household name one day. Mayall who will be 90 this year has stopped touring.

I think Clapton has the best career resumes ever.

@arminiushermann09

I'd say so. And it looks like he lefts his aura for some great guitarist to follow. Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page in this group, Peter Green with Mayall an played with Duane Allman along with Cream an Blind Faith. I'd say that's one hell of a resume.
