Ego Machine
Escape With Romeo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm still here in this scene
no one sees no one cares
they all got an ego machine
Ego machine
Just like robots in designer clothes
everybody's dancing with themselves
I've got nothing left to loose
Ego machine
Through your own maze you cannot see
what happens with others
what happens with me
the lie of individuality
your freedom means prison to me
Ego machine
Destroy the machine!
(As sick as elvis
as blind as god is)
The song "Ego Machine" by Escape With Romeo is a critique of the superficiality and narcissism of modern society. The lyrics suggest that people are controlled by their egos and are therefore unable to truly connect with others or understand their own limitations. The singer of the song seems to feel isolated and powerless in the face of this collective self-absorption, as expressed in the line "no one sees, no one cares."
The repeated refrain of "ego machine" reinforces this sense of people being reduced to mindless cogs in a societal apparatus that prioritizes individualism over empathy or understanding. The second verse especially highlights this, with its ruminations on people as "robots in designer clothes" whose "freedom means prison" for others. The final call to "destroy the machine" is a plea to break free of this collective delusion and find a more genuine way of relating to each other.
Overall, "Ego Machine" is a fierce critique of the dehumanizing effects of excessive individualism and self-aggrandizement in contemporary culture. By depicting people as trapped within their own narrow views and unable to see beyond themselves, Escape With Romeo suggests that true connection and understanding are only possible if we can break out of this ego-driven mindset and start empathizing with others on a deeper level.
