MARS
Eureka Birds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

With little atmosphere on Mars
It's just an empty floating ball
It's not for you
It's not for me

Then there's the other one you see
Close to the sun, it's Mercury
It's burning hot
And freezing cold

oh!
It's not for me

Outside the buildings getting higher
With trucks and cranes they never tire
They build it up
And burn it down

And all the empty land they leave
It is no home for you and me

It's empty space
In the fire

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Eureka Birds' song "Mars" paints a stark picture of the red planet. With little atmosphere and no signs of life, Mars is simply a barren, empty ball of rock floating in space. The repetition of the refrain "It's not for you, it's not for me" highlights the sense of isolation and alienation that one might feel when contemplating the vast emptiness of the universe.

The lyrics then move on to the planet closest to the sun, Mercury. Despite being one of the closest planets to Earth, Mercury is vastly different from our home. It has a harsh, unforgiving environment, with temperatures that swing between burning hot and freezing cold. The chorus of "It's not for me" reinforces the idea that space exploration and discovery may not be something that is universally appealing.

The final verses of the song describe the ever-expanding human civilization, with buildings getting higher and higher as new construction projects are undertaken. But despite all this building, there is still ample empty space left behind, waiting to be inhabited or perhaps forever left abandoned. The lyrics suggest that this vast, empty fire of space may offer no real home or comfort for humanity, and that perhaps our focus should be on cultivating and preserving the home planet we already have.
