Chicago
Everyone Everywhere Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
For a long time now
I just never thought I would see
You walking away from this town
You're going to Chicago
I hear it's really cold
You'd better pack a jacket
Please swim in Lake Michigan
And send me a postcard
You're going to Chicago
I hear it's really cold
You'd better pack a jacket
Bring along a heavy coat
The song, "Chicago" by Everyone Everywhere, tells the story of someone who is leaving their hometown and going to start a new life in Chicago. The person they are leaving behind seems to be coming to terms with this, but is still a little sad about it. The lyrics are simple, but heartfelt, expressing concern for the traveler's well-being and a desire to remain connected to them, despite the distance.
At the heart of this song lies the theme of separation and how it affects those left behind. The imagery of Lake Michigan and a postcard represent the desire that the person leaving will always remember the one they left behind and keep them in their thoughts. The lyrics also suggest that the journey ahead will be a difficult one, citing the cold weather in Chicago as something the traveler should be prepared for.
Overall, "Chicago" is a bittersweet song that captures the feeling of saying goodbye to someone who is moving on to new adventures.
