After two years of lineup changes, personal problems and a lot of frustration, Falling Nine have found themselves not only personally, but artistically. With band members coming and going for various between 2003 and 2005, the release of their debut EP Attempted Fate in 2006 and the firing of Jenny Jarman, who had shared vocal duties with David Lydiard on Attempted Fate, the band, now scaled down to a two-piece, have begun to find their sound.
Newly released cd All Paths Divide finds the pair flexing their creative muscle and expanding on the ideas that they only began to touch upon during previous release Attempted Fate. The multi-layered vocals that made Invisible a favourite are back in force, adding extra weight and counter melodies to the already strong songs and with Lydiard no longer sharing the lyrical and vocal spotlight, the bands latest output is a far more stronger and cohesive effort than the last.
Each of the six songs have been thoroughly worked over in production, each track painstakingly crafted to make it sound as good as it can be. The levels of production are infinitely higher this time around, with an assortment of instruments and noises adding something to each song, but it's the addition of multiple backing vocals to the majority of songs that make them stand out even more. Quicksand itself featuring around 90 voices all performed by Lydiard with the exception of about two or three that are performed by Steve Watts.
In Lydiard, Falling Nine have a tortured frontman who knows how to write melodic, catchy rock songs and who can deliver a rock solid vocal performance and in Watts they have their very own Brian Wilson, a man who will ring the neck out of a song in order to get the best out of it, and who won't stop until he gets the desired sound he is after.

Falling Nine Lyrics

Singing out of tune
With empty words and phrases
Every tone cuts deep as rain in Summer
Every chord formed tears open wounds
Come down
Let the rain wash over me
Falling down
Let the floods fall down and sweep me away
Cries were silent from her broken lips
Screams were nothing more
From her than pushed out air
Every tear filled my throat with boulders
Every tear was a painful memory
Come down
Let the rain wash over me
And cleanse my soul
Falling down
Let the floods fall down and sweep me away
Come down
Let the rain wash over me
And cleanse my soul
Falling down
Let the floods fall down and sweep me away
I'm the blackened candle
Holding all the light
I'm the whispering wind
That howls throughout the night
When in comfort I stand in fires
Every tone cuts deep as rain in Summer
Every chord formed tears open wounds
Come down
Let the rain wash over me
And cleanse my soul
Falling down
Let the floods fall down and sweep me away
Come down
Let the rain wash over me
And cleanse my soul
Falling down
Let the floods fall down and sweep me away
The lyrics of "Reverie" by Falling Nine paint a dark and profound picture of inner turmoil and emotional pain. The imagery of an evil choir singing for Satan sets the mood for the song, with out-of-tune voices and empty words symbolizing a sense of emptiness and despair. The comparison of their tones cutting deep like rain in Summer and chords tearing open wounds reflects the profound impact of negative influences on the soul.
The repeated refrain to "come down, let the rain wash over me and cleanse my soul" suggests a deep desire for purification and renewal. The metaphor of rain washing away the pain and floods sweeping away the burdens speaks to a longing for relief from the weight of emotional distress. The cries of a broken woman are described as silent and her screams as merely expelled air, emphasizing the sense of helplessness and the weight of repressed emotions.
The imagery of tears filling the singer's throat with boulders and representing painful memories vividly conveys the heaviness and torment of their experiences. The lyrics capture the dual nature of suffering and longing for release, with the imagery of a blackened candle holding all the light symbolizing the struggle to find hope and light in the midst of darkness. The mention of standing in fires for comfort further emphasizes the paradoxical nature of finding solace in pain.
Overall, the song "Reverie" delves deep into themes of emotional turmoil, longing for catharsis, and the struggle to find peace amidst inner chaos. The haunting and evocative imagery, combined with the raw emotions expressed in the lyrics, create a powerful and introspective narrative that resonates with the listener on a visceral level.
