Never Heard of Him
Fastbacks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I heard you talk about your friends about it all
The other night as I tried to sleep, I couldn't sleep at all.
It sounds to me that you speak highly of yourself and how everything wrong in your life is somebody's Fault but not your one.

"Whatever happened, someone else will pay.
I want my money now!"

I thought I heard you on the phone upstairs today
Screaming along, stomping around
A piece of your mind through the window pane.

I went out and saw the world
It revolves around and around.
I went out and saw the world
It revolves around you!

Whatever makes you want to live your life this way?

There's someone there holding you back
Ruining your day after day.

Overall Meaning

The Fastbacks’ song Never Heard of Him tells a story of a person who overhears somebody talking about their life and their problems. The singer of the song cannot sleep while the other person talks about their life, which leads the listener to believe that their troubles are quite significant. However, it becomes clear that the person speaking highly of themselves is what causes their problems. They believe that everything wrong in their life is somebody’s else fault and not their own. The chorus of the song repeats the line, “Whatever happened, someone else will pay. I want my money now!”

Later in the song, the singer hears the same person screaming on the phone, stomping around, and trying to vent their frustration. The singer comments that the world revolves around that person, implying that they are self-centered and only see events in the world that affect them and their life. The song concludes with the singer questioning why someone would choose to live their life this way when someone is holding them back, ruining their day every day.
