Fat Freddy's Drop have now released their second major studio album, Dr Boondigga & The Big BW - shipping GOLD on the first day of release on 26th May 2009. Featuring Art & Design by Otis Frizzell, the album features nine fresh phat tracks that span soul, dub, reggae, techno, blues flavors.
The group's first major release was a live album, Live at the Matterhorn, a lengthy jam session recorded in a popular Wellington night club. Their first studio album, Based on a True Story was released in 2005. After only a day of release it had gone gold and was number one in the New Zealand album charts despite having little advertising or marketing. The album's first single, "Wandering Eye", spent 17 weeks in the RIANZ Top 40 Singles Chart and peaked at number six.
Freddy's dominated the 2005 New Zealand Music Awards, taking Best Group, Best Album, Best New Zealand Roots Group and the Peoples Choice Award. On December 18, 2005 the group were awarded the Worldwide "Album of the Year Award", as voted for by over 20,000 listeners of Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 1 'Worldwide' show.
They won three awards at the 2006 New Zealand Music Awards (18 October). The People's Choice Award, the Highest Selling NZ Album ([album/artist=fat freddy's drop]Based On A True Story[album/artist]) and Best Music Video for the single Wandering Eye.
Midnight Marauders and Hope both scaled to the number one spot on Gilles Peterson’s top twenty Worldwide picks in 2002 and 2003 respectively.

Fat Freddy's Drop Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Are they tellin' me to shake it loose?
Are they tellin' me to shake it loose?
Are they tellin' me to shake it loose?
Are they tellin' me to shake it loose?
Are they tellin' me to shake it loose?
Are they tellin' me to shake it loose?
**
Shake that Shiverman,
Hairs on the back stand.
Build a cold tight frame.
Got me lookin' like a runaway.
Lookin' like a runaway
Lay it down to the ground.
Captivated by the sound.
Try but you can't speak,
When you're motivated by deceit.
Motivated by,
Deceit.
Deceit.
Deceit.
Motivated by,
Deceit.
Deceit.
I don't want this
Deceit.
I don't want
Deceit.
I don't want
Deceit.
I don't want
Deceit.
[Repeat]
Shake that Shiverman loose.
Shake that Shiverman loose.
Shake that Shiverman loose.
Oh lord.
Shake that Shiverman loose.
Shake that Shiverman loose.
Shake that Shiverman loose.
Oh lord.
Shake that Shiverman loose.
Shake that Shiverman loose.
Shake that Shiverman loose.
Oh lord.
Shake that Shiverman loose.
Shake that Shiverman loose.
Shake that Shiverman loose,
Oh lord.
Shake it loose, yeah
Shakin' it loose, oh yeah
Don't keep tellin' me,
What I should do, see,
I can do whatever I please.
That's just the Shiverman,
and his crooked plan,
To bring a good man to his knees.
On the TV,
In the papers,
It's on the pretty things,
That keep you guilty,
Being who you really,
Don't you worry, I know,
and I never want you to feel alone.
Know you always got somewhere to go.
Never want you to feel alone.
Know you always got somewhere to go,
Go, man.
And I'm makin' my way back home,
But we still got far to go.
And I'm makin' our way back,
Makin' our way back,
Makin' our way.
Makin' our way-
Shake that one loose.
Shake that one loose.
Shake that one loose.
Shake that one loose.
Shake it to him, to him shake it loose
The lyrics of Fat Freddy's Drop's song Shiverman seem to be about resistance and standing up to pressure from society or the media. The repeated question "Are they tellin' me to shake it loose?" suggests that there are external pressures and expectations weighing on the author, and they are questioning whether or not they should comply with these expectations. The chorus speaks to shaking off this pressure, being freed from the "Shiverman" (perhaps representing anxiety or fear) and regaining control of one's own life.
The second verse suggests that there is a specific source of pressure, perhaps lies or deceit being spread through the media that are manipulative and destructive. The repetition of "Deceit" reinforces the idea of falsehood and manipulation being at play. The bridge provides a message of support to the listener, reminding them that they are not alone and that there is always somewhere to go. The song ends with a call to action, to keep shaking loose and making progress towards personal freedom.

Found this one-of-a-kind-performance yesterday and am totally enthralled, smitten, delighted, addicted to the full 19 minutes and 41 seconds of it. Have spent my time playing this over and over and over again since then. And every single time I discover more. Power, finesse, groove, smooth, wild and structured, inspired. Superbe build-up. Yes. I love. Love. Love. Love.
