LAST TRAIN HOME
Fatboy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Rain is falling
It's been coming down for days now
Knocking on my window
Seems like it's calling out my name somehow
Like a ship lost at sea
A safety haven calls for me

I never should have left
I never should have said goodbye
I never meant to hurt you
I never meant to make you cry
Last train home

All the time I wasted
Running from the truth you knew
All the roads I travel in the end
Would lead me back to you
No more lonely streets to roam
I'm on the last train going home

I never should have left
I never should have said goodbye
I never meant to hurt you
I never meant to make you cry
Last train home

Isn't it strange the thing you wish for
Is right at your door

I never should have left
I never should have said goodbye
I never meant to hurt you

I never meant to make you cry
Last train home

Overall Meaning

Fatboy's Last Train Home starts with the sight of rain hitting the window, and the downpour has continued for days, creating a melancholic mood. The rain seems to be calling out the singer's name, just like a lost ship at sea calls out for a haven. He regrets leaving the person he loved, and no matter where he went, all roads led back to that person. He acknowledges that he wasted time running away from the truth, and now that he has realized it, he has no more lonely streets to roam.

The narrative is one of regret, nostalgia, and yearning for home. The central theme is the desire to return home after a long time spent wandering around the world. The singer realizes that what he had been searching for was right at his door. The lyrics are a clear metaphor for attempting to escape from one's origins, only to return to it later in life. The last train home represents the final opportunity to get back to where you belong before it is too late. It's a song about finding your true self and coming to terms with your past mistakes.
