Let's Have a War
Fear Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Chorus]
There's so many of us
There's so many of us
There's so many
There's so many of us
There's so many of us
There's so many [Repeat: x2]
Let's have a war
So you can go and die!
Let's have a war!
We could all use the money!
Let's have a war!
We need the space!
Let's have a war!
Clean out this place!

It already started in the city!
Suburbia will be just as easy!

[Chorus]

Let's have a war!
Jack up the Dow Jones!
Let's have a war!
It can start in New Jersey!
Let's have a war!
Blame it on the middle-class!
Let's have a war!
We're like rats in a cage!

It already started in the city!
Suburbia will be just as easy!

[Chorus]

Let's have a war!
Sell the rights to the networks!
Let's have a war!
Let our wallets get fat like last time!
Let's have a war!
Give guns to the queers!
Let's have a war!
The enemy's within!

It already started in the city!
Suburbia will be just as easy!

[Chorus: x2]

Overall Meaning

The song "Let's Have A War" by Fear is a punk rock anthem that ponders on the idea of war and its possible motives. The chorus consists of the repeated phrase "There's so many of us" which can be interpreted in different ways. It may refer to the large population of the world or the masses that can be easily controlled and sent off to war. The repetition of this phrase emphasizes the notion that human life can be disposable and easily replaced.

The verses are a sarcastic and ironic take on the reasons for war. The line "So you can go and die!" highlights the fact that ordinary people, who have no direct involvement in the conflict, are the ones who suffer the most. The line "We could all use the money" illustrates how war can be a lucrative opportunity for some, particularly those in the military-industrial complex. The line "We need the space" may be a commentary on overpopulation or a reference to the concept of manifest destiny. The line "Clean out this place" is particularly jarring as it implies that the world would be better off without certain groups of people.

The second half of the song deals with more specific targets like blaming the middle class, giving guns to the queers, and recognizing that the enemy may already be within. These targets imply that anyone can be a target and that the consequence of war is displacement and destruction. In conclusion, the song "Let's Have A War" highlights the absurdity and horror of war through its biting lyrics and punk rock style.

This song is calling for an internal war against our own ridiculous society. It’s very clearly stated.

“It already started in the city. Suburbia will be just as easy.”

“We can start in New Jersey.”

“THE ENEMY IS WITHIN.”

“We’re like rats in a cage.”

“We need the space. Clean out this place.”

Any other interpretation is simply wrong

I'm 17 and a senior in high-school. I've been born and raised on punk/metal and I think I can say I was raised right. My dad got me a jacket with FEAR on it. It was actually his. So I decided to listen to these guys a few months ago. Never looking back. Punks the best thing to happen to me for a while. Kinda sucks no one's like me at school but that's what college is for. Love punk.

Fuck college.
Ain't gonna find more punks there. I get what it's like being the only punk though. You'll find your group eventually. Or they'll find you... Happy to hear its one of the best things to happen to you. I still feel the same way after being introduced to it 15 years ago. Rock on!
