Sandcastles
Fellows Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hate that
I don't know what I'm doing
That I wake up
And feel so disillusioned
I was hoping
For a spark to keep me going
I've been waiting
Holding on and coping
Yeah I'm hurting
And I ain't afraid to show it
Bottled up until my cup is overflowing
Yeah the truth is
I know it's getting better
But the feelings
They get so strange to weather
Sunshine
Sunshine in the rain
Give me comfort
Comfort in the pain
Yeah
So how's it supposed to feel
New wave crash everything you hoped to build
Tide wait for no man
The cold breeze leave what's left for snowman
Still I show face
Faith my environment shines
Lord knows they want to dim the fire inside
Pure bliss every minute divine
Do it again and again when my energy dies
Memory bank
Everyday make a deposit
Keep it short change if you ain't on roster
Always been a sure thing
All ways I conquered
The path less chose don't mean less problems
I lent this flow from Fiasco and
My brush stroke similar to Picasso and

Heads turn feel it even if they eyes closed
So what's a sand grain to the King of the Castle

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of the song, the singer expresses their frustration and confusion about their current state of life. They feel lost and disillusioned, unsure of what they are doing and lacking motivation. They had hoped for something to inspire them and keep them moving forward, but instead, they feel stuck and are just trying to cope with their emotions. Despite feeling hurt and overwhelmed, they are not afraid to show their vulnerability, acknowledging that their emotions are building up inside until they can't contain them anymore. The singer knows that things are gradually improving, but the emotional rollercoaster they are on makes it difficult to navigate through the ups and downs.

As the song continues, the singer metaphorically compares their journey to building sandcastles on the beach. They describe how they are facing challenges and obstacles (symbolized by the crashing waves and cold breeze) that can destroy what they have worked so hard to create. Despite this, they choose to keep moving forward, facing their environment with faith and determination. They acknowledge that others may try to extinguish their inner fire, but they remain resilient and find moments of pure bliss and divine inspiration even in the midst of struggles. The singer emphasizes the importance of perseverance and resilience, portraying a sense of strength and determination in the face of adversity.

The singer draws inspiration from artists like Lupe Fiasco and Picasso, using their creative influences to express their own unique perspective. They highlight their ability to captivate and inspire others, even when they might not be fully aware of it. The lyrics suggest a sense of self-assurance and confidence in their artistic abilities, comparing themselves to royalty or a powerful figure ("the King of the Castle"). The final line poses a contemplative question, asking what significance a small sand grain holds compared to someone who sees themselves as the ruler of their own domain. This metaphorical comparison hints at the singer's inner strength and resilience, portraying a sense of self-worth and determination to overcome challenges and setbacks in their journey.

Movie review below --- spoilers included so read on with caution.

I'd give this movie like a 4/10.

Personally I felt that the pacing in this film was not good. I struggled with Ocre as a main character because I felt that he wasn't doing enough to impact his environment (internal and external). He was a product of everything that happened to him, and while I was hooked on him at the start, I lost a lot of empathy for him as I didn't feel he was stretched to a breaking point as a character or ever faced with any kind of decision.

He began as a spineless man, and ended as what I saw to be a bitter man. As a narrative this story isn't interesting. It may be realistic - I can't speak to that - but from a narrative structure it's kind of weak.

There was also a scene toward the end of the movie with the sloppiest framing and setup I've possibly ever seen. There was a super awkward setup with Ocre and his commanding officer where he said the priest gave him the cigarettes. It was framed so strangely tightly and the transition from the wide to the close up on Holts character was just bad.

Also the pacing was just meh. I would go from being really invested in a particular subplot or smaller character and then they would just vanish entirely for another 40 minutes of the film, and I would be left with a bunch of dudes in a desert bitching about MREs. Strangely edited, strangely written, and strangely directed.

ok first they call an M-60 a Abrams tank they have a soldier in country
with no plates in a combat zone, they have PPl way to close to the
truck as they issue water, they have up armored Humvee's with the doors
off. -----may have good intent ,but bad execution in this film,or so I
thought at first but as I saw more it brought back memories from Desert
Storm ,and to a lesser extent Iraqi Freedom .

What they did get right was how the villagers and US interacted We
owned the days and they owned the night as far as the villagers thought

It's a really good movie! Highly recommend, and heavily wish more people talked about it.

Absolutely loved that heart-to-heart scene between Okre and Harper after he asks his wife if she loves him

This movie is portraying a glipse of reality in war more than technical combats & war machine fights. The difficulty to survive both as soldiers & civilians. War isn't about winning or losing. Not about mission accomplishment either. Everyone involved lost something or entirely at the end. Whether a bit of themselves and/ their loved ones.
Beside the well-writen story, acting is great too. Henry Cavill especially. That guy is always more than Superman to me.
