Yo, I'm Thai, And I just finish watching this movie and it amaze me by how realistic and brutal this film was. Here some details I'd like to provide to all foreigner friends so you can understand the dark vibe in this Thai prison and get into this piece of art better. btw I've never been in prison and I love to keep it that way. All the details I provided is known by most Thais and be thought to you to remind you that you should keep off that kinda place.
1. The Tattoos : Most of prisoners in the film covered their bodies with Tattoos which is Handmaded in Prison. It's difference from an artist's work you could get at Khaosan rd. You could easily tell If you're Thai that which ones is prison Tatts. It's been made by a ball pen ink. Poke under the skin by any sharp metal you could find in prison. Which, in the morning If the warden spot the difference in your body, you'll get beat up so bad. And that's represent how tough you are. Basically, guy who cover himself with full-body Tatts is proved. That you fear nothing and you've been in and out of prison for many times. You could see that poor guy who's been raped at the beginning has no tattoo on him. So the rapist could tell easily that he's a newbie here and got no friends to help him. Makes him vulnerable, and was picked as an easy target to be raped or abuse.
2. Cigarettes : As you can see that the cig is a currency used for trading in prison. So, it makes Billy's situation much more tough as he's got no family to provide such thing or bribe the warden to transfer any sig for you.
3. Yaba : Yaba is basically a Metamphetamine manufactured in form of pills which is one of the cheapest drugs you could find in Thailand. Sold in unit of "Taew" (line). And it's break down in half to be consumed called "Kha" (Leg). It's popular among truck drivers. As they have to drive long distance in the night, so it helps them to stay awake all the night.
4. Housekeeper : The dude who's interviewed Billy at the start of the film is called "Por Bahn" (Housekeeper). He's a kind of criminal who's been in and out of prison so many times, so he raised into the rank or being respect by other prisoners. Por bahn is necessary for a warden too. As he can help organized these criminals into order. In real prison there's more than one housekeeper and they've got a mutual power and separated their men to control. Or even individuals to be raped...
5. Picking fight : A tall teen new prisoner who's picking an unnecessary fight at the start of the movie isn't nonsense at all. He said in Thai "I maybe a new here. But I'm seasoned from another place. You can try me". He just wanna show others that he's familiar with these kinds of things. Prison things. If you don't act tough, you'll be listed as the one that can be bullied. Or even raped. It's fight or die situation. Props to the actor his acting is really spot on as you can see in his eyes that he actually feels insecure but need to act tough to show that he's not bullyable. (I quite sure he might be faced a real sentence before doing this role, So realistic)
6. Clothesline : As you see in the film that bad things always happened at the washing area or a clothesline. This is not even for a cinematography purpose. It's a superb realistic detail and prove how goooddddd this film is. On the weekday that they clean their blanket, they'll have to hang it on a shared washing line. Which, when they spread the blanket wide. It provides a perfect cover that block warden's line of sight. So, this is on purpose. It's a dead space that prisoners can do shady things. Trade drugs, beat someone up or even having sex. Super well researched.
7. The Coach : The coach in this film is actually a boxer. And not ordinary boxer. His name is Somrak Kamsing, and he is first Thai boxer to won Olympic gold medal. And most of the fellow trainees are actually prison boxer If I'm not remembering it wrong.
This film is so dark It's really hard to watch, yet it's really accurate and showing a spirit in the darkest place that you shouldn't be visit even once. Thanks to the research team and thanks that the production is foreigners. If it's been made by Thai I'm pretty sure that it will be cut off or banned by Thai's baby nonsense censorship authority as they just wanna show the world only bright side of this country.
And for the one who haven't been to Thailand yet, one of the most accurate things about this film is, how friendly and nice Thai people are. even amongst these notorious group of people. You'll always find a spirit of respect and humility. We carry each other through this chaos of our country. And you'll always be welcome no matter what races you're from. Or what gender.
PS. Joe Cole. Man, you're so good in this role and I don't understand why you've been overlooked as an actor. Hope you like Thailand and please come visit Thailand again as a tourist. love you man.

This movie transports you to a whole other world - one that is visceral, surreal, tribal, and profane. It's manifestation of the ability of the human spirit to find strength, beauty, warmth, and humanity in the bleakest of circumstances also makes it sacred. Don't miss this great work of art.

Some one fishing for likes 🤣 u portrayed your self to be some sort of film columnist 👌🏻

@Jay D The irony is you're the one fishing for likes, this is the best and only relevant comment about the movie.

@Jay D I said the original comment was the best comment, I didn't think it could be any more obvious. Good luck.

@Jay D I never said my comment was the best, I don't know why you insist on misinterpreting everything or you're just pretending to, that's why it seems so "unnatural" to you.

I'm very impressed by this movie. There isn't allot of dialog going on but still manages to tell a great story. The scenes are very immersive and create a strong connection with the main character. Not the easiest film to watch, but it's good to see there are still movies being made portraying a realistic view of darkness and brutality that's still going on in this world.

Try the book - it's an incredible story. The book goes into full detail in which the film doesn't cover a great deal of it at all

Lived right there in Thailand, in the town this movie started in for over a year. The detail and cultural adaptations are spot on. Should have been nominated for best picture, or at least for best independent or foreign film. You really can’t gauge how well done this was unless you’ve spent enough actual time in Thailand though, and critics are usually arrogant, cynical pricks with very little perspective. So, I’m not surprised, but do WATCH IT. It’s fantastic!!

How’s Thailand like as a foreigner? I may be moving there

It got nominated for Cannes, which is better than an academy and means much more.
