Isn't that honestly all it needed to fix the utter stupidity of that original plot line? Otherwise the film would have been over in five minutes with them dropping on top of the fleet and blowing it to smithereens. This also explains the gargantuan supply of red (Kyber?) crystals seen on the planet.

You know what’s funny, though you rant about forced inclusiveness, you actually just showed a missed opportunity to do a good natural job by having a minority character struggle with an overcome a disability and adversity through willpower and the force

I’m enjoying your channel by the way, though I question if sometimes you’d reach more demographics and cut off some vectors of detractors if you chose examples that better fit the demographics of the forced whatever you’re criticizing.

I mean that you make really insightful, valid points, but some people may seize on the use of a male character to show the problems with a female character by debating the difference rather than your arguments. I think you can strengthen your platform this way… you yourself have pointed at some very good examples like Sarah Conner vs Captain Marvel, but I wonder if some people might get it better like in Holdo video.

Another really good expansion I wanted to mention is that terminator 1 and 2 are like a family fighting together… parents fighting for their unborn child in a way many can relate to, then a mother and a pseudo father who don’t see eye to eye coming together to protect the child. It’s something any parent could get along with, and something I felt was missing from Dark Fate. There’s no reason you couldn’t do it with a same sex parent dynamic, and they missed a fantastic opportunity in missing this “theme” (I know) that is so relatable to anyone. What was missing from Dark Fate to me was the family that develops and comes together to protect each other that gives it that personal resonance beyond another save the world story.

The point is that even if someone wants to put a “modern” message in it, there are plenty of opportunities if you don’t miss the point entirely and write it like an idiot.

A storm trooper a trained killer since he was small and following orders, he breaks free becomes his own man, becomes a leader and eventually a Jedi. I would’ve loved to see the growth and strength a character like that would have. I also thought i saw that potential in the actor that portrays him. But no, we don’t get that Finn. Ugh.

I feel that Finn's fixation on Rey could have been a strong character trait. Stormtroopers are brought up to be fanatics, so it could be that instead of being a fanatic about The First Order, he could be a fanatic about the first human being he could connect with.

The Looinrims still works. Its not that he isnt hyped on Poe his initial escape and turning on his former allies in the First Order was done with extreme enthusiasm. Then he thinks Poe is dead in the TIE crash. Then he meets Rey and proceeds to spend far more time with her. Then he reunites Poe and is very clearly excited.

Honestly, I was feeling that Finn should’ve kept his stormtrooper armor and been the Jedi in the series. A defected stormtrooper still in his armor equipped with a lightsaber to fight his Sith Leader and along the way meets Luke and learns about the light side of the force as well as certain dark side elements giving Finn a purple blade and it gives a nod to Sam Jackson’s mace windu

@Anti Bull I was thinking along the lines of what happen in Jedi: Fallen Order, Cal wasn’t immediately found out even in the presence of the first sisters, though, he was cut off from the force and only partially reconnected with it to save his friend which was sensed by the first sisters, so I’m thinking, with your friendly criticism, we can say that Finn isn’t really aware of his connection to the force and thus isn’t really able to be sensed through force sense, and having Mace Windu survive and coming back to help train Finn would be super interesting if you can write it right. It would have to be the perfect moment in the story.

I dont think it would have made much sense post Order 66.
They hunted down anyone with force powers for a reason… but maybe enough time passed that the survivors (not sure if Force connection is linked genetically in canon) reproduced and made a new generation. If the powers aren’t linked genetically, then random chance just needs time to bring up a new generation (same result).

It’d certainly make a better story though. While including some fan acknowledgment (or even bring back Mace himself to train Finn).

also a very cool idea. either way Finn had the most potential of any SW character since....well probably ever. farm boy Luke is the classic heroes tale and they tried to retread that again with Rey....poorly.
But Finn, as the escaped child warrior could be somewhat fresher territory.

In the first one, they were already ruining his premise. Instead of being a guy who did bad things because he thought it was right (or because that's how he was raised), he was actually just an innocent janitor. Then after the first time being put in battle, he realises the First Order is bad and quits. Also, in that battle he was affected by his fellow storm trooper dying in his arms, but 20 minutes later they're just mooks he can mow down without caring.

Yeah honestly he was the main reason why I kept watching the trilogy. Since the very beginning, I was shocked when seeing a Storm Trooper rebelling against orders for the first time. I was expecting a good development but unfortunately didn't happen.
Actually I always considered him the main protagonist. Ray never took that position in my mind even after the last movie.

This reminds me of a problem I'm seeing with a lot of American movies: character development is relegated to literally one or two lines of dialogue. That's. It. The characters say who they are—once—and then get on with the action/plot. Instead of EVERY scene SHOWING us who the characters are, the dialogue TELLS us. It's lazy and maddening.

At the moment we're going through a pretty bad time in cinematic history. That goes for both movies and shows.

Granted, 90% of everything is shit, and has always been so. But current movies can't hold a candle to movies from say the 90's. Even if we got a lot of crap back then too, proportionally speaking there simply was a lot more good stuff in the mix. Movies used to have a lot more depth and sense of gravitas, rather than just more raytraced spectacle. Way more masterpieces per year than we get nowadays, despite us producing a lot more today. I believe the main reason is because entertainment, today, is merely content to fill the shelves of streaming services. It got commodified.

For TV shows, I feel like the early 2000's were when they peaked. But even then it was slim pickings. Nonetheless, we finally got more realistic characters that were no longer at the very extremes of the good/bad spectrum. Shows with real story arcs, where whatever happened in an episode actually impacted the rest of the story going forward, were slowly becoming more common. And we finally got more mature storytelling, that kept us emotionally invested in both the story and the characters. It sure impacted the industry, with a lot of contemporary and later shows trying to mimic the elements that made those shows so successful, but without ever understanding what those elements truly were. That's why nowadays we're staturated in predictable formulaic nonsense, even if it has a continuous story arc, because obviously that's the only element from a show like BSG2003 that could explain its success.

That said, there's plenty of stuff from the 90's and before, tons of non-US movies, and tons of anime I haven't seen yet to tide me over until the industry as a whole finally comes back to its senses.

Thing is, John Boyega is actually a really decent actor. It's one of those situations where I think he realized as soon as The Force Awakens finished he was being brought in just to be "Strong Black Character" which is a shame considering how people actually liked Finn for his personality in the Force Awakens. He had some dumb moments when he...uh...managed to hold his own against Kylo Ren but not a standard First Order Stormtrooper, but he still had an actual character. By The Last Jedi he was just "Black Person" shoved in for diversity with no real thought to his character at all. So honestly, I think Boyega just thought "Fuck it" and started acting in really over the top ways on purpose because he's still going to get paid for his roles in the films and they can't fire him without incurring the wrath of the Woke 14 Year Old White Girl Twitter Army.

Making people aware of the risk Hellmann's poses causes the makers of Hellman to get Real upset but they chose to dedicate themselves towards making Hellmann's seem like it was the greatest thing to ever exist. I'm getting chills thinking of the charge on the ram. Instead of robbing Finn of the one thing he could've done, it would neatly close down Rose's arc, looping back to her own sister's sacrifice, while allowing Finn to still be a hero. He, along their quest, taught her about the greater good. It could've been epic.

I like to think that Finn had to focus on the fundamentals of fighting so much and Kylo relied more on his force powers too much. That's why Finn was such a challenge for Kylo in the first duel.

I feel like in Rise of Skywalker, in that moment where Finn is holding on to Jana as the ships tilt she should've slipped from his grasp only for him to reach out and pull her hand back up to his with the force. Hyperspace tracker makes semi perfect sense to me.. You open up hyperspace to every direction and send your radar waves trough it. Would require insane amounts of energy to work... but it's the flagship and a lot bigger than the average one, so perhaps its all one big energy generator for the tracking beacon.

I actually hated what they did to this whole series . I am not one to pick over details but the first movie set us up to believe that the force could be in anybody. AND just because you were from somebody strong didn’t necessarily make you the best with the force. They even showed a little boy with a broom at one point and that was exciting. But i felt like they set it up but didn’t pay us back. Another drinkers videos. That they made her the daughter of Palpitine totally wrecked everything. That they hinted the Finn might have force but didnt do anything! And we saw no other developments with other people having the force. Irritating!

Wow, watching this video I just realized how little I actually remember about TLJ, I still remember thinking that Rose was a spy sent by the first order and everything that comes before the last 30mins, which I can only remember because they felt so draggy is an absolute blur. On the topic of having both Finn and Rey as the dual protags, I always thought it would have been cool if Rey was more gifted in the force techniques like mind tricks, moving things, etc and then Finn would be more gifted in the combat side like a Jedi knight. Also would’ve been cool if he wore a modified stormtrooper outfit with his helmet with the blood marks as his symbol, the he uses his gun skills and lightsaber in tandem, would’ve made for a cool final battle against phasma

That was an amazing plot that also opens up the possibility of a romance between Finn and Rey. Eventually Kylo could be brought back and we could have an scene mirroring the original with Rey, Finn, and Kylo together just like Han, Luke, and Leia. This would also open up the possibility of the resurrection of the Jedi order along with a sort of reformation and elimination of the rules of the old order. This could be used in later films as a plot. As some Jedi agree with the old ways while others agree the new ways, leading to a Jedi civil war with a little Skywalker Palpatine family drama thrown in.

Huge missed opportunity... I wanted to see Finn struggle with learning to relate to people outside of a military command structure, and even show a touch of PTSD or periodic inappropriate ruthlessness in everyday life. He should gave a lot of trouble with being "human" after being raised as a soldier and nothing but from a very young age

That was great. I would really love to hear how you would continue Rey, Finn, and Luke's characters arcs (and your amazingly improved storyline) into the "Rise of Skywalker" movie too.

(When I first heard the title of the final film, I thought it was going to be that they were going to create a new Jedi Code that built upon but also fixed some of the flaws of the old Jedi Order, and that instead of calling themselves Jedi, the new followers of it would call themselves Skywalkers in honor of Luke. But obviously that didn't happen.)

Finn had so much potential… while he was a bit of a clown in the force awakens I really enjoyed his character and was excited for what they would do with the foundation they built. I was more interested in him than Rey or Kylo Ren, so it was disappointing that in the last jedi they just reset his character arc and have him go on a ridiculous goose chase while being lectured about the exact things that he should be teaching other people. If instead of Rose he had gone on a journey with Poe, and taught him not to glorify war because he loses sight of the people it’s affecting, while also actually developing their relationship (platonic or romantic, I really don’t care), I think that could have been compelling while still keeping the general plot of that movie. If I had my way I’d have made him the main character from the start.

I think it would have been nice to see a glimpse into how they actually make stormtroopers out of prisoners as there must be a lot of brainwashing that goes into the process, and they could have shown it from Finn's point of view, even if it was a very short flashback montage.

Hell, if you wanna have Rose in episode 9 then make it so Finn is also teaching her over the course of the film in all aspects of Stormtrooper work, so that when she makes the sacrifice she instead ejects at the last second, still stopping the cannon but barely surviving the explosion and escaping in a First Order ship.

The character was meant to have been trained since childhood to nearly the same standards as a clone trooper.
He should have been a steely warrior Like Captain Rex advising the resistance and struggling to adapt outside the Storm trooper corps.
Instead he’s just another Jar Jar.

Plenty of real world examples where those sorts of battles are won by the local 'kiddie bear' equivalent. Also that whole action is pretty much turned by the Chewie capturing the walker.

@TheMatthew001 in the original trilogy timeline sure, but anyone with brain cells (in Disney looks like anyone have brain cells) will think that someone kidnapped to be trained since childhood could be a hardened and lethal soldier, not at the same level than a Clone Soldier but yes better than the original ST, but of course, then we remember that in the Orignal trilogy, in the final movie, the best troops of the emperor were beaten by kiddie bears.

@TheMatthew001 the Empire Storm troopers were meant to be low grade meat shields making up with their lack of skill through sheer numbers but the First order troopers were based off the clone trooper training model.
Lack of numbers compensated by first rate but brutal training from infancy.
If Finn was an Imperial Storm trooper I’d sort of understand his clumsiness but this film screwed the character. Bear in mind he managed to take a lump out of Kylo Ren as a non force user with a light saber. Even Mandalorians fully tool up for such a job.
Then they turn him into Jar Jar.
You could still have had the humour with him and Poe with Finn being strait laced and initially humorless and Poe wisecracking like the old Arnie film Red Heat.
Such a waste.

I mean stormtroopers didn't have nearly the level of training or prowess that clones did. they were suppose to be a more affordable replacement for the clones, they weren't exactly better on the battlefield just better on the wallet.

I thought Finn was the main character after how TFA started. It was such an interesting and fresh take to have a Trooper turn Jedi. I am not an avid reader of the EU, so maybe it has already been done, but seeing as those were rendered non canon we could at least have had it as canon via Finn.

damn straight. Only thing that ittitated me was how easily he turned on his former comrades and just started blasting them down. Other than that I loved the potential he presented. I would have loved to watch a trilogy just about his journey and the implications of "humanized" Stormtroopers. So much potential for meaningful moral conflict between Poe and Finn when it comes to killing Stormtroopers... this could have been so much better :(

I think it would have been cool if we explored Finn's force use more. What if Rey actually killed chewy, and started to head more to the dark side. Finn with his obsession with Rey, seeks out Luke's assistance and learns to become much stronger. Meanwhile, Kylo turns Rey closer and closer to the dark side. Instead of Palatine returning, we see a newly empowered Finn take on Rey and Kylo, in an attempt to turn her back. Idk if this would be any better, but feels like it would make an interesting dynamic without creating yet another Skywalker protagonist, and instead focusing on the stormtrooper turned force user to save someone he cares about from falling into their family lineage.
