Take Me Away
Flo Rida vs. Napoleon XIV Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Remember when you ran away
And I got on my knees
And begged you not to leave
Because I'd go beserk

Well you left me anyhow
And then the days got worse and worse
And now you see I've gone
Completely out of my mind

And they're coming to take me away ha-haaa
They're coming to take me away ho-ho hee-hee ha-haaa
To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see those nice young men
In their clean white coats
And they're coming to take me away ha-haaa

You thought it was a joke
And so you laughed
You laughed when I said
That losing you would make me flip my lid

Right?
You know you laughed
I heard you laugh, you laughed
You laughed and laughed and then you left
But now you know I'm utterly mad

And they're coming to take me away ha-haaa
They're coming to take me away ho-ho hee-hee ha-haaa
To the happy home with trees and flowers and chirping birds
And basket weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes
And they're coming to take me away ha-haaa

I cooked your food
I cleaned your house
And this is how you pay me back
For all my kind unselfish, loving deeds
Ha! Well you just wait
They'll find you yet and when they do
They'll put you in the A.S.P.C.A.
You mangy mutt

And they're coming to take me away ha-haaa
They're coming to take me away ha-haaa ho-ho hee-hee
To the funny farm where life is beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see those nice young men
In their clean white coats

And they're coming to take me away
To the happy home with trees and flowers and chirping birds

And basket weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes
And they're coming to take me away ha-haaa!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Take Me Away" by Flo Rida and Napoleon XIV are about a man who has gone insane after his lover leaves him. He is convinced that she is the reason for his madness and believes that he is being taken away to a "funny farm" or mental institution. The lyrics are sung from the perspective of the man who is now in the throes of insanity. He recalls a moment when he begged his lover not to leave him and how he has lost his mind since then. He also expresses his anger at his former lover for leaving him and "paying him back" by going insane.

The song has a dark comedic tone and exaggerates the man's madness with the use of exaggerated sounds and phrases like "ha-haaa" and "ho-ho hee-hee". The song lampoons the idea of mental illness and the way society deals with it. The use of the term "funny farm" is a reference to the way people with mental illnesses were often unfairly depicted and institutionalized in the past. However, the song's lyrics also reveal the man's pain and heartbreak at losing his love, creating a complex emotional portrait of a person struggling with psychological issues.

That was some 50 years ago. I just released
some brand new material.  I'm excited for
you and other tubers to hear and especially experience "LEAVE THE CHILDREN
OUT OF IT!"

I'm still crazy after all of these years and
loving every second of my insanity. But I've always loved writing and "LEAVE
THE CHILDREN OUT OF IT!" just needed to be written and shared.

After hearing it, so many people have said to
me that this has happened to them! Both man and women and unfortunately the
children have suffered enormously under very similar circumstances.

Used to have this on a 45 single back in grade school. The flip side was the same song backwards. It was a pretty big hit in 1966.

Not only was the track backwards, but the printing of the song with the name of the artist were backwards. And, the original distributor was Warner Bros. records. The WB shield was BW on the lfip side. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA....

Loved this album! We would sing these songs at the top of our lungs while jumping off the swings above the bar level at recess in elementary school! Absolutely the best years to grow up in!!

Same here...my dad played it for us all the time. It was on a 45 and the backwards version was on the other side. This just brought back so many memories.

This song was the first track on a compilation of quirky songs my parents had when I was a kid and I doubt I went more than a week throughout my early childhood without hearing it once if not several times over. Only now after finally hearing I'm Happy They Took You Away do I recognise the disturbing qualities which have prompted responses of both fear and respect for this crazed anthem of unashamed mania. I think I love it more now more than ever Ha HA!! Thanks for introducing me to Josephine.
