St Jude
Florence the Machine Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Another battle never won
And each side is a loser
So who cares who fired the gun?
And I'm learning, so I'm leaving
And even though I'm grieving
I'm trying to find the meaning
Let loss reveal it
St. Jude, the patron saint of the lost causes
St. Jude, we were lost before she started
St. Jude, we lay in bed as she whipped around us
St. Jude, maybe I've always been more comfortable in chaos
And I was on the island and you were there too
But somehow through the storm I couldn't get to you
St. Jude, somehow she knew
And she came to give her blessing while causing devastation
And I couldn't keep my mouth shut, I just had to mention
Grabbing your attention
St. Jude, the patron saint of the lost causes
St. Jude, we were lost before she started
St. Jude, we lay in bed as she whipped around us
St. Jude, maybe I've always been more comfortable in chaos
St. Jude, St. Jude
And I'm learning, so I'm leaving
And even though I'm grieving
I'm trying to find the meaning
Let loss reveal it
Let loss reveal it
And I'm learning, so I'm leaving
And even though I'm grieving
I'm trying to find the meaning
Let loss reveal it
Let loss reveal it
The song "St. Jude" by Florence + the Machine is a powerful exploration of loss, chaos, and the search for meaning in the midst of confusion. The lyrics begin with the image of a conversation with no destination and a battle where both sides are losers. The singer is trying to find meaning in the midst of their grief and confusion, even as they acknowledge that loss is the only thing that can truly reveal what is important in life.
The chorus features the repeated invocation of St. Jude, the patron saint of lost causes. The singer identifies with the idea of being lost before even starting, and finding comfort in chaos. The second verse offers a specific example of this chaos, describing a storm that keeps the singer from reaching someone they care about. However, St. Jude appears to offer her blessing even as she causes devastation, and the singer cannot keep their mouth shut, needing to grab attention and make sense of their experience.
The repeated chorus offers both a plea and an acknowledgement of the singer's situation, as they seek to find meaning and understanding even in difficult circumstances. Ultimately, the song is a tribute to the power of loss and the strength it can offer when we let it reveal what truly matters.

"Maybe I've always been more comfortable in chaos." Finally, someone else says it for me...so poetically.

True for me as well. I can't decide if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but embracing it has helped. Chaotic people may not be the best at planning ahead, but at least we are used to improvising and can roll with the punches when life throws surprises at us.
