What the Water Gave Me
Florence the Machine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Time it took us
To where the water was
That's what the water gave me
And time goes quicker
Between the two of us
Oh, my love, don't forsake me
Take what the water gave me
Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
Pockets full of stones

Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow

And oh, poor Atlas
The world's a beast of a burden
You've been holding on a long time
And all this longing
And the ships are left to rust
That's what the water gave us

So lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
Pockets full of stones
Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow

'Cause they took your loved ones
But returned them in exchange for you
But would you have it any other way?
Would you have it any other way?
You could have it any other way

'Cause she's a cruel mistress
And the bargain must be made
But oh, my love, don't forget me
When I let the water take me

So, lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the over flow
Pockets full of stones

Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow

Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
Pockets full of stones

Lay me down

Let the only sound
Be the overflow

Overall Meaning

"What the Water Gave Me" is a song by Florence + the Machine, from her second studio album, "Ceremonials." The song is known to be a reference to Frida Kahlo's painting of the same name, which details the moment before her own suicide attempt. The song features several allusions to waves and water, which are symbolically connected to life and death, as well as beauty and danger.

The opening verse of the song speaks to the idea that everything in life has a cost, that destinations come at a price. It suggests that everything good and bad that comes to us can be attributed to the waters of life. It illustrates that everything in life is transient, and that time and love both come together to create a fleeting and transient reality.

The chorus, "Lay me down, let the only sound be the overflow, pockets full of stones " shows the despair of the singer. The phrase "pockets full of stones" refers to the practice of suicide victims weighting themselves down to make sure they drowned. However, there is a sense of liberation in the song as well, a sense of letting go of past hurt and anguish.

The closing verse of the song speaks to the idea that life is a cruel mistress, and that we must make a bargain with it in order to live. It speaks to the fragility of life and the inevitability of death. The singer seems resigned to the fact that the waters will take her and perhaps alludes to the idea that suicide may be a path to take.

For anyone who may not know, this song is inspired by the English writer Virginia Woolf. She suffered from Bipolar Disorder throughout most of her life and eventually succumbed to it. She committed suicide by drowning with "pockets full of stones." This song beautifully depicts her struggle. One of Florence's best songs!
