The Concept
FLYING CIRCUS are fusion, bringing together the energy of 70ies hard rock and the artistic approach of progressive rock bands of the same period.
The Influences
LED ZEPPELIN, BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE, RAINBOW & URIAH HEEP on the one hand. PINK FLOYD, GENESIS, YES, JETHRO TULL & KING CRIMSON on the other. And of course all the bands that can be classified as 'somewhere in between' (RUSH, PAVLOV'S DOG, WISHBONE ASH, MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND...). Moreover: folk, metal, psychedelic, blues rock, kraut rock, jazz rock - you name it! BERT JANSCH, IRON MAIDEN, HAWKWIND, FREE, CAN, MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA - ANYTHING fitting in with the concept.
The Sound
FLYING CIRCUS sound old-fashioned. They avoid polished sterility and replace it with a sound which lays its emphasis on warmth and earthiness. Acoustic instruments, Gibson Les Pauls, Hammond sounds and analog synths play an important role.
The Ever-recurring Question
Why take to musical styles and sounds which - allegedly - are dead and gone? Another question: Why not? A lot of people LOVE the music of the 70ies and are frustrated because almost nobody dares to look back to past times. And: Fusion createssomething new - HardProg.
HardProg?
A balance between power and art, emotion and intellect, trying to avoid all the false steps the two most-scolded musical styles of the 70ies have allegedly taken: Neither is there boring or dull guitar thrashing, nor the blasลฝ showing-off of the musicians' dexterity. FLYING CIRCUS combine rousing heavy parts with psychedelic pictures of sound or lyrical folk passages instead, and thus create songs full of tension and atmosphere: An absolutely unique musical world - in time because time-less.
The Musicians
Michael Dorp - vocals โข Lars Frik - keyboards โข Lorenz Gelius-Laudam - guitar
Falco Kurtz - drums โข Michael Rick - guitar โข Roger Weitz - bass guitar
A Short History
Band formed in winter 1988/89. First gigs in 1990. The semi-cover-group soon turns into a much demanded live act in its own right: The band plays numerous gigs mainly using original material in and around Grevenbroich, the home town of Flying Circus (somewhere between Dรผsseldorf and Cologne).
A growing number of fans, a growing amount of commitment: The hobby project turns semi-professional - debut-CD on the 'Early Birds' label in 1998, growing interest of the music press, and more prestigious gigs in, for example at the PopKomm, a huge music fair in Cologne (playing on stage for Germany's biggest private TV station RTL, and the legendary 'Burg Herzberg-Open Air' (alongside 70ies-stars like Man, Colosseum, Wishbone Ash, Caravan etc.).
1999 - a big anniversary concert in the band's home town, a first small tour through clubs in several german counties, a second CD in the making. Plus: recordings for 'Signs of Lifeโ, a 'Tribute to Pink-Floydโ - sampler on Angular Records (other bands involved include Pendragon, Tiamat and Angel Dust).
2000: The second album 'Out of the Waste Land' is published on the โEarly Birdsโ label, boosting bandโs popularity even more.
2004: Despite the demise of their label, Flying Circus finish their most ambitious project to date, and they release the album โPompโ on their own. The band gets voted one of the best โsong actsโ of the year at the German Rock and Pop Awards 2004 with the title โCarpe Noctemโ from the โPompโ-album.
January 16th, 2010: At last! The new FLYING-CIRCUS-CD 'FORTH' and the 20th anniversary box set 'BACK & FORTH' have arrived!

Trying to make sure your toy poodle don't bark
(chipmunk voice)[1,2,3,4 la la what you waiting for?]
La la, can't you come down?
Your mumma's not awake and your daddy's outta town, oh baby
La la, come out tonight
Temperature's groovy and the moon's outta sight
Trippin' down the stairs tippy-toeing in the dark
Trying to make sure your toy poodle don't bark
1,2,3,4 la la what you waiting for?
La la, don't make me wait
I got enough gas to get us out to the lake, oh baby
La la, gosh you look great
We'd never come back if I had my way
It's kinda rough riding in my old '63
But it's been running good since you been looking at me
1,2,3,4 la la what we waiting for?
La la, don't you know-oh yet
Making love is better than the late late show, and baby
La la, don't be so slow
I got the feeling that our love's gonna grow
Hush now baby, slip away baby
Hush now baby, tippy-toe baby
La la la la la la la la
La la la la laaaa
La la, can't you come down?
Your mumma's not awake and your daddy's outta town, oh baby
La la, come out tonight
Temperature's groovy and the moon's outta sight, and baby
La la, don't you know-oh yet
Making love is better than the late late show, and baby
La la, don't be so slow
I got the feeling that our love's gonna grow
The Flying Circus's song La La is a playful and flirtatious tune about two young lovers sneaking out at night for a romantic tryst. The song begins with the singer tripping down the stairs, trying to be quiet so as not to wake their partner's toy poodle. The chipmunk-like voice singing "1, 2, 3, 4 la la what you waiting for?" creates a sense of urgency and excitement, urging the lover to come down and sneak out with them.
The lyrics are filled with innuendos and playful references, such as "I got enough gas to get us out to the lake" and "making love is better than the late late show". The singer is eager to spend time with their partner and wants to make the most of the night, hinting at the possibility of a future together by saying they "got the feeling that our love's gonna grow".
Throughout the song, there is an underlying sense of both excitement and danger, as the two lovers sneak out in the dark, risking getting caught by their parents. However, the carefree and adventurous spirit of the song ensures that the listeners are rooting for the two young lovebirds to have a successful and fun night together.

A bass guitarists dream? He's carrying the thing! Love it!!
@pamelahay6242
The joke in this clip however is that Doug Rowe, bass playing here, was actually their lead guitarist. ๐

They Were A Good Band With A String Of Good Hits
@pamelahay6242
Yes they were an excellent โ liveโ band with a lot more serious repertoire than Hayride and LaLa.
I loved their covers of the Buffalo Springfield ; (Stephen Stills & Neil Young).
@melegssore
Love it. Great memories, i want to go back

Can I come with you Jelte Hanssen ? :)

Both La La and Hayride were written by Mac Gayden who also wrote Everlasting Love (#1 hit in the UK) and Rainbow Valley for The Love Affair. And get this.... Mac Gayden is also the guy who played that amazing quirky wah-wah guitar on JJ Cale's Crazy Mama, something I always thought JJ Cale himself did.
@pamelahay6242
Gosh and hasnโt Everlasting Love survived the decades and the generations? It has such an uplifting, optimistic vibe to it. ๐

When I think of Bubblegum music I think of music like this. I have not heard this before and it's pretty good. The song I best know them for was from an old compilation LP from about 1970. I think the song was named Run, Run, Run.

James Wynne played in Bathurst in the 90s with a band called Pig Iron Bob. He left the band and was replaced by Doug Rowe, who played with the band until his death. Proud to say I got to see them both perform many times, I was a huge fan of that band.
