Glory
Fool's Garden Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
So many pieces remain tonight,
You've had it all and now you can't
Get up.
It's just the way the story goes,
The glass is cut and none of those
Who've licked your boots
Get up.
She's run over the fields of glory,
Sha lah lah,
Cold rain is slapping
Across her face,
Sha lah lah.
She's run over the fields of glory,
Sha lah lah.
She's run away from the fields of love,
The fields of love.
She's run over the fields of glory,
Sha lah lah
Cold rain is slapping
Across her face,
Across her face,
Across your face.
The lyrics to Fool's Garden's song Glory seem to be about a person who has had it all but has now fallen from grace and feels unable to get back up. The opening lines "It's what you think, it's what it's like" suggest that the person's perception of their situation is what's causing their struggle. The line "So many pieces remain tonight" could be interpreted as the person feeling like they have lost so much that they cannot be put back together. Despite having had many people in their life who were willing to "lick their boots," they cannot rely on them now that they are down. The repetition of "Get up" in each verse is a clear indication that the person is struggling to find the motivation to keep going.
The chorus describes a woman running over the fields of glory and running away from the fields of love. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for the person in the verses who has fallen from grace and is now trying to escape the pressures and expectations of their former life. The phrase "Cold rain is slapping across her face" paints a vivid picture of someone fighting against the elements while trying to get away.
Overall, the lyrics suggest a feeling of hopelessness and desperation. The idea of running over the fields of glory could be seen as a last-ditch effort to escape a life that has become unbearable.
