Cold afternoon in November
84 years ago, changing the world with a cry
Reading the lines on her face
So much to remember
Her father was down by the
Lake when Samuel died
Once in a while, I don ́t see
A way out of here marie, Marie
Come on and dance with me into the light
`Cause I ́m lost in the dark
Cyrus was talking `bout war
He said time is a healer
What will remain of the stories
That we all forget
They found him this morning in tears
Down on the kneeler
He opened his heart and he
Lost everything that he had
Marie, Marie lay down your hands on me
Once in a while, I don ́t see
A way out of here marie, Marie
Come on and dance with me into the light
`Cause I ́m lost in the dark
Oh Marie don ́t let it rain on me
Once in a while, I don ́t see
A way out of here marie, Marie
Dance to the light with me show me the way
`Cause I ́m lost in the dark
The lyrics of Fool's Garden's song "Marie Marie" tell the stories of three individuals, Muriel, Samuel, and Cyrus, who are each dealing with their own struggles and searching for a way out of their darkness. The song starts with Muriel, a woman who has lived a long life and carries the weight of her memories. Her father was present when Samuel died, implying that she has experienced loss and sorrow. The name Marie is mentioned in the chorus as a plea for comfort and guidance. It is as if Muriel is calling out to Marie, seeking solace and a way to escape her emotional turmoil.
Next, Cyrus is introduced, and he speaks about war and the passing of time. He discusses the stories that are forgotten, leaving behind only fragments of what once was. Cyrus is depicted as a man who has opened his heart, only to lose everything he held dear. Again, the mention of Marie in the chorus suggests that he is seeking her help to find his way back into the light.
The repeated plea for Marie's assistance emphasizes the singer's feelings of being lost in the dark. Each verse introduces a different character, all dealing with their own struggles and hoping that Marie can guide them towards a brighter path. The song captures a sense of desperation and the longing for someone or something to provide comfort and a sense of direction.
