AIN'T NO WOMAN
Four Tops [the] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Ain't no woman like the one I've got.)
(Ain't no woman like the one I've got.)
(Ain't no woman like the one I've got.)

Every day the sun comes up around her.
She can make the birds sing harmony.
Every drop of rain is glad it found her.
Heaven must have made her just for me.
When she smiles so warm and tender,
A sight for sore eyes to see.

Oooh, (ain't no woman like the one I've got.)
Oh, no, they don't come better.
(To make her happy doesn't take a lot.)
She don't ask for things, no diamond rings.
(So together, like a hand in glove.)
Like pages in a letter.
(Ain't no woman like the one I love.)

She can fill me up when it's down I'm goin' (I'm goin').
Put a little music in my day.
Wouldn't be surprised if my love keeps growin' (it keeps growin').
Bigger every minute that she stays away.
I would kiss the ground she walks on,
Cause it's my word, my word she'll obey, now.
Woo-ooh. (Ain't no woman like the one I've got.)
Well, I kiss the ground she walks on.
(To make her happy doesn't take a lot.)
She's a real good friend right to the end.
(So together like a hand in glove.)
A lonely man when she's gone.
(People, ain't no woman like the one I love.)

Oooh. What a good, good thing I've got.
She means to me a lot.

(Ain't no woman like the I've got.)
No, no, they don't come better.
(To make her happy doesn't take a lot.)
She don't ask for things, no diamond rings.
(So together, like a hand in glove.)
Like pages in a letter.
(Ain't no woman like the one I love, people.)

(Ain't no woman like the one I've got.)
Well, I kiss the ground she walks on.

(To make her happy doesn't take a lot.)
I'm a lonely man when my baby's gone.

Overall Meaning

In "Ain't No Woman" by Four Tops, the singer praises the woman he loves and emphasizes that there is no other woman who can compare to her. The song is filled with adoring words, as he describes how she brightens up his days, brings him joy, and completes him. He states that even the rain is happy to touch her because she is so special. He also mentions how he doesn't have to go out of his way to keep her happy because she doesn't need material possessions like diamond rings to prove their love. The chorus reinforces this, saying that there’s no woman like the one he has, and she is everything to him. The song ends with the singer affirming his love, as he explains how much she means to him, and how lonely he is without her.

Magical talent! Words do not suffice to express the greatness of the 70s era movies and music. But for me that very special period in time is bittersweet! Here is one very depressed person's take on living life with depression.

I cannot listen to anything from the 70s anymore - opens up many wounds and memories both good and bad. Depression gets much worse with age. A great tune like this one makes me think about the things that were, were not, and could've been. It was simultaneously the best and worst of times. But that dichotomy does not fully show its true self until you get to your 40s - at least it was that way for me. I'm 56 now.

The internal imprisonment of your soul to depression makes everything look dark, gloomyy, meaningless, hopeless. You feel utterly alone even being in any setting where there are hundreds of people. You simply cannot transcend the incessant despair you feel. Your mind wants to constantly think of sad things, and there is no escape! The depression holds you prisoner in its sharp jaws and refuses to let go. Trying to make it go away makes it even worse, because it only makes you more conscious and aware of it. It is a very strange and paradoxical reality, even when you know that it is anything but reality.

You think about the good times when you were younger, all of your loved ones were together at X-mas and other holidays, the fun times with your friends, minimal stress and responsibilities, and when you were the architect of your destiny where anything felt possible. But that that is quickly tempered by thinking that the good old days are gone forever, and that life is meaningless, so why accomplish anything at all, if in the end it is all for nothing anyway. You are haunted by the reality that many of your loved ones are gone, and that death is the cruel reward you receive for having been alive in this world. This is the hellish waking nightmare that you live with every single day. It is uttter torment! This is why some people do themselves in....it becomes too painful of an existence.

Instead of governments spending billions of dollars in military and spacial scientific breakthroughs, they should instead find a cure for depression! Oh, but illness is big, big business. What was I thinking? Thoughts?

I was on the USMC when this came out. Bout to return from the Meditatraian Crs. Soul music was goin out Disco was coming in. It was a curse for many many soul,RB Grps. Only a few would survive. Like the OJs, Isley Bros, EWF, ISSAC H, BARRY W ParlamtFunk, Disco didn't last that long thank you Lord.. went
under after a few yrs. But Black Music returned in the 80$ with MJ, Prince, Rick James ...we held it down...
