I'll Be Home For Christmas
Frank Sinatra Bing Crosby & Nat King Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll be home for Christmas
You can plan on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree

Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams

I'll be home for Christmas
You can plan on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree

Christmas Eve'll find me
Where the love light gleams

I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams

Overall Meaning

The song "I'll Be Home For Christmas" is a popular holiday tune that portrays the emotions of longing and desire to be with family during the festive season. The opening lines "I'll be home for Christmas, you can plan on me" set the tone for the song and show the singer's commitment to returning home for the holiday celebration. The singer then goes on to request traditional Christmas decorations, such as snow and mistletoe, and gifts under the tree showing the sentimental nature of the holiday.

The second stanza "Christmas Eve will find me where the love light gleams" depicts the singer reminiscing about fond memories of past holiday seasons with family and loved ones. This line can also be interpreted as a reference to the love and warmth he hopes to find once he arrives home for Christmas. The final stanza, "I'll be home for Christmas if only in my dreams", is a somber and poignant ending, showing the reality of not being able to physically go home for Christmas, perhaps due to distance, military deployment, or any other reason. The line signifies that while the desire to be home is strong, sometimes it is just a dream that cannot be fulfilled.

Overall, the song is a touching reminder of the importance of family and love during the holiday season, and the nostalgia and hope that come with it.

You can't beat the old singers, like Sinatra, Nat King Cole plus many others. You can actually hear the words that they are singing. Although many are now gone, their legacy lives on.

Love being able to understand the words. These songs are a singers best

SuperFlashDriver

The thing is, new christmas songs these days have the vocals mixed in with the instruments, which makes it harder to hear what they actually say. Back then, the vocalist used to be front and center, everything was at the sides or at the back of the mastering and mixing.
