How Deep Is the Ocean
Frank Sinatra featuring Ken Lane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How much do I love you?
I'll tell you no lie
How deep is the ocean?
How high is the sky?

How many times a day do I think of you?
How many roses are sprinkled with dew?
How far would I travel
To be where you are?
How far is the journey
From here to a star?

And if I ever lost you, how much would I cry?
How deep is the ocean?
How high is the sky?

How far would I travel
To be where you are?
How far is the journey
From here to a star?

And if I ever lost you, how much would I cry?
How deep is the ocean?

How high is the sky?
How high is the sky?

Overall Meaning

In "How Deep Is The Ocean," Frank Sinatra with Axel Stordahl and His Orchestra express their deep and profound love for someone special. The lyrics are simple yet powerful, as they compare the depth of their love to the depth of the ocean and the height of the sky. The song's melody is soft and slow, creating a romantic and passionate atmosphere.

The lyrics also express a sense of devotion and unwavering commitment to their loved one. They ask how many times a day they think of them and how far they would travel to be where they are. They even contemplate how much they would cry if they were to ever lose them. These lines demonstrate a deep emotional connection and highlight the strength of their love.

Interestingly, the song was written by Irving Berlin in 1932 and has since become a classic. It has been recorded by several legendary performers, including Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Ella Fitzgerald. Despite being over 80 years old, "How Deep Is The Ocean" remains a popular love song and continues to be performed by artists around the world.

This is most eloquently perfect music: The Voice, Melody, and wonderfully orchestrated musical prosody. GENIUS!

@princeandrey

Early Sinatra. His ingenuous sound is a special kind of beautiful. But he didn't know how to end a song till a bit later during his come-back period, in which he was unsurpassingly great!

@ManuelaMoraes

This is just... divine. This may be the first dance I'll have with my husband at my wedding day. That would be truly wonderful.

@tryarunm

I hope you did. God bless the both of you.

@Litzwire17

Just seeing your comment...20 years after it was the first dance at my wedding, played by a few friends and fellow musicians. I recommend.

@louisecherico7726

been listening for past two hours. great memories of growing up in a proud Italian household!

@catman916

There is an excellent reason why he was known as "The Voice" during this period. No one surpassed him. Axel Stordahl's string arrangements were as good as the later ones of Gordon Jenkins and Nelson Riddle in my opinion.

@zackklein2225

So Beautiful! Not just his voice but the song writing and composing were so much better too!!
