Here Comes The Night
Frank Sinatra vocal; Harry James & His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here comes the night, my cloak of blue,
Here comes the night with dreams of you.
Somewhere up there I'll see your face,
The breeze will be your warm embrace.
Here comes the night to thrill my heart,
My one delight while we're apart,
And now I'll seek that rendezvous,
Here comes the night, holding me tight for you.

Overall Meaning

Frank, in this song "Here Comes the Night", the singer is waiting for the night to arrive, as it reminds him of the person he loves. The night is personified as "my cloak of blue" and the singer anticipates being reunited with his love. He envisions the person's face in the stars and imagines a gentle breeze as a warm embrace, creating an overall sense of longing and anticipation to be with the subject of his affection. On one hand, the singer is thrilled to be reunited with the person they love, and the thought of the night holding them tight brings comfort. On the other hand, there is a sense of sadness, as the singer will only be able to experience this closeness during the night while they are apart. @Trombonology

I love Drew Page's baritone sax, beefing up the ensemble sound in the intro. After an inauspicious, distinctly sharp comes in the opening line, Frank's vocal is very good. Harry's open-horned work is masterful, naturally.
