It was recorded and released as a single by Frankie Valli. The song was among his biggest hits, earning a gold record and reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a week. Gaudio was a bandmate of Valli's in the Four Seasons. It was Valli's biggest solo hit until he hit No. 1 in 1975 with "My Eyes Adored You".

Gaudio, an original member of the Four Seasons, refers to "Eyes" as "the one that almost got away" until Windsor, Ontario, radio station CKLW (a station also serving the Detroit metro on the American side of the border) intervened. In 1967, the record's producers urged Paul Drew, program director at the legendary station, to consider the tune for rotation. For much of the 1960s and 1970s, CKLW was credited with launching hit records via its powerful signal, blanketing the Great Lakes region. Drew did not warm to the song at first but accepted an invitation to hear it live at the Roostertail, where Valli was performing a weeklong stint with the Four Seasons. Drew liked what he heard and added the song to his station's playlist. "The switchboards lit up, and the rest, as they say, is history," Gaudio recalls.

"Can't Take My Eyes Off You" has been recorded in many other arrangements, many of which have charted in different countries. The song is a staple of television and film soundtracks.

The song was written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio. Melodic elements bear a similarity to passages from the Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia section of the 1956 ballet Spartacus (Suite No. 2) by Aram Khachaturian.

The original recording, from an arrangement by Gaudio and Artie Schroeck, was made at A & R Studio 2 (formerly Columbia Studio A), at 799 7th Avenue in New York City, with Crewe producing and Phil Ramone for engineering.

Billboard described the single as "strong rhythm ballad material from the pen of Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio with an exceptional Valli vocal combined with an exciting Artie Schroeck arrangement." Cash Box called the single a "smooth, gentle, softly spoken romancer."

A rant from me.
My husband took his own life in February and when he was hospitalized, I was crying holding his hand and this song started playing on the random playlist that was on ringing on my cell phone, and I understood, it was time to let him go.

They think they have to scream out the chorus at the top of their voice, when actually the chorus is the least important part of the song's depth of feeling. For the many people-both famous and not so famous-who have performed this song, almost no one performs it properly, other than the great Frankie Valli. The closest any other singer has come to Valli (when they performed this song) is another classic Italian/American singer who-like Valli-possesses great phrasing: Frank Sinatra.

The song requires a very skilled singer who is capable of both genuine tenderness and a delicate touch, someone with GREAT phrasing who REALLY knows how to bring out the song's depth of feeling. However, most singers these days think THE way to sing an emotional song is to bellow out at the top of their register, especially at the chorus. This is what gets them on shit shows like 'America's Got Talent' instead of training them to be singers whose voice will remain timeless, like that of Frankie Valli's.

Your son is far too young right now to understand any of this, so by all means let him scream out the chorus at the top of his little lungs. However, when he gets old enough to understand what makes a REAL singer, if you truly want to give him a gift that will last him a lifetime, a gift he can pass from generation to generation, teach him how to PROPERLY sing. It's one thing to pass a song along from generation to generation, it's quite another to pass on the ability to properly sing, so one can hear a song the way it was intended by the song's composer to be heard and understood.

Shirley Pena thank you, what started as me sharing a wholesome moment quickly turned into a three paragraph lecture on how my two year old son SHOULD sing a song and how I should parent him. I’ll assume many will agree with the way you’ve come off: condescending, know-it-all, cold, and with ZERO compassion.

When I used to get up in the night to feed my newborn son, I used to sing this to this to him because he was a much-wanted “miracle” baby whom we adored. He’s now 36 years old and we love him so much and whenever I hear this song it takes me back to 1986 and those special nights with him 💕

In the car me and my grandma use to listen to tons of Frankie vallie songs. She passed away of a heart attack in March- she was only 66. I'm 11. If you're grandma's still alive next time you see her tell her how much you love her. 😭

It's not the mics, it's the sound mixing. The sound engineers back then gave the different instruments and voices room to breathe but these days it's mostly all compressed and mashed together
