Mary Jane's Last Dance
Freedom Fry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She grew up in an Indiana town
Had a good-lookin′ mama who never was around
But she grew up tall and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on them Indiana nights

Well, she moved down here at the age of eighteen
She blew the boys away, was more than they'd seen
I was introduced and we both started groovin′
She said, "I dig you baby, but I got to keep movin' on
Keep movin' on"

Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin′ in and I′m tired of this town again

Well, I don't know, but I′ve been told
You never slow down, you never grow old
I'm tired of screwin′ up, tired of going down
Tired of myself, tired of this town

Oh, my my, oh, hell yes
Honey, put on that party dress
Buy me a drink, sing me a song
Take me as I come 'cause I can′t stay long

Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm tired of this town again

There′s pigeons down on Market Square
She′s standin' in her underwear
Lookin′ down from a hotel room
Nightfall will be comin' soon

Oh, my my, oh, hell yes.
You got to put on that party dress
It was too cold to cry when I woke up alone
I hit my last number and walked to the road

Last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin′ in and I'm tired of this town again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Freedom Fry's song "Mary Jane's Last Dance" describe the story of a woman who grew up in an Indiana town with an absent mother. Despite this, she grew to be a strong and alluring woman who was desired by many men. The singer of the song meets her at the age of 18 and they grow close, but Mary Jane ultimately tells him she has to keep moving on. The chorus repeats the phrase "last dance with Mary Jane" as a way to signify the final moment they have together before moving on. The verses that follow showcase the singer's feelings of being tired and stuck in his current town, looking for something new.

The lyrics paint a picture of a fleeting and bittersweet romance. The line "last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain" suggests that the relationship may have been built on unhealthy coping mechanisms rather than genuine love. The symbolism of the pigeons and the hotel room hint at a sense of confinement and emotional detachment. The chorus's repetition conveys a sense of finality and urgency, emphasizing the importance of the fleeting moment they have together.

Overall, "Mary Jane's Last Dance" is a melancholic rock song that speaks to the desire for something more and the inevitability of change. It invokes a sense of nostalgia for past experiences and a longing for something new and exciting.

This is one of the coolest music videos I have ever seen.

@freedomfrymusic

Thank you so much!!

Freedom Fry is an amazing duo. Their sound is unquestionably unique and possibly one of the all time best musically harmonious duos of recent times. The music business has changed so much now however, I believe it makes it hard for singers of even this quality to make a decent living.

Not surprised how well francais integrates into this song, it is a spectacularly fun language in hip-hop too, just butter for the ears syllabically when put to a phat groove! J'adore!!

@gulnihalgumusay1844

@whitespyder9

This is great! Finally a cover that's not trying to copy the original EXACTLY (and missing the mark) and instead doing something unique.
