Future Islands Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
You know I miss you more when I'm stuck inside
This room without you and you're still asleep
I'm like a prowling lion that's seeking pride
When the morning finds you
I belong to you
I belong to you
And that's where I began
Deep in the night
You know I hear your voice when I cut the lights
And I see you there and you're sound asleep
And it's the only time when I find peace
When this ends I'll find you
I belong to you, it's true
I belong to you
When you take my hand I understand where you end
That's where I began
And all it took, one walk with you
And I knew that I belong to you
I belong
I belong, I belong to you
The lyrics of Future Islands's song "Deep In The Night" convey a sense of longing and connection between two individuals. In the first verse, the singer expresses how much they miss the person they love, especially when they are apart in the darkness of the night. The imagery of being "stuck inside this room without you" highlights the feeling of emptiness and yearning when the loved one is not present. The comparison of the singer to a "prowling lion seeking pride" suggests a sense of restlessness and a desire for fulfillment that can only come from being with their partner.
The chorus emphasizes the deep bond and belonging that the singer feels with their loved one. The repetition of "I belong to you" reinforces the idea of a strong and unbreakable connection between them. The lyrics suggest that when the loved one takes the singer's hand, they feel a profound understanding and a merging of selves, symbolizing a deep level of intimacy and unity. The idea of knowing where the other ends and they begin speaks to a sense of completion and wholeness that comes from being in each other's presence.
In the second verse, the singer continues to express their longing for their partner, even when they are physically apart. The mention of hearing the loved one's voice when the lights are cut and finding peace in that moment suggests that the presence of the other person brings comfort and solace to the singer, even in their absence. The imagery of the loved one being "sound asleep" conveys a sense of tranquility and serenity that the singer finds when thinking of their partner.
The final chorus reinforces the idea of belonging and connection between the singer and their loved one. The realization that they belong to each other is presented as a truth that is deeply felt and understood by both parties. The lyrics convey a sense of certainty and commitment to the relationship, with the singer acknowledging that a simple walk with their loved one was all it took to know that they truly belong together. The repetition of "I belong, I belong, I belong to you" at the end emphasizes the depth of the emotional bond and the importance of the relationship to the singer.

@James-if3kc and Morrissey is a Sinatra ripoff. Hell, almost every singer has a influence that they are inspired by. So what's your point?

Words cannot describe how I felt when I heard this beautiful song for the first time. In the current climate of 'popular' music it makes me heave a huge sigh of relief and thank goodness for Future Islands. From the opening notes and the instant Samuel's voice starts, you are captivated. Unique talent as always. This is what intelligent, thoughtful music is all about. Thank you Future Islands ❤
