Desafinado
GETZ Stan & BYRD Charlie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Se você disser que eu desafino, amor
Saiba que isso em mim provoca imensa dor
Só privilegiados têm ouvido igual ao seu
Eu possuo apenas o que Deus me deu

No fundo do peito bate calado

Que no peito dos desafinados
também bate um coração

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Desafinado by Getz Stan & Gilberto Joao are a beautiful representation of the conflict between love and art. The lyrics talk about how the singer's partner criticizes their musical ability and calls them desafinado, meaning out of tune. However, the singer explains that this criticism causes immense pain and that they only possess the musical abilities that God has given them. The singer then argues that their music is actually bossa nova, and it's just a natural extension of their creativity.

The most striking part of the lyrics is when the singer reveals that even the desafinados or those who are out of tune, also have a heart that beats silently in their chest. The singer's partner might be a talented musician, but they forget that music is not just about hitting perfect notes. It's about conveying emotions, and even those who don't have the best musical abilities can connect with people through their music. The lyrics are a reminder that love and music are both beautiful, and one should not criticize the other.

This song will always remind me of my father. When I was in 6th grade this was one of the only CDs he would ever play driving me to school in the morning. He would occasionally pick me up on Friday afternoons when he could get off work early. I'm taken back to those afternoons right now. I'm glad my father is still with us. Every day is a gift.

Very nostalgic for me as a freshman in high school when my mother, a music lover, bought this album. I listened to it over and over again myself, intrigued by the unusual rhythms and the combined sound of Stan Getz’s sax and Charlie Byrd’s guitar. Still love hearing it after all these decades.

One of greatest tunes from Stan and Charlie! This was on the radio in the winter of 62and 63. I Loved it then and still do!

One of my first and favourite LPs - and then CDs - how did he always sound so smooth? And Charlie Byrd, well !

@MsMst12

Grew up with this album and many others. My dad played jazz guitar. Hated it back then. Love it now. Brings back great memories

my brother (buddy deppenschmidt) played with Charlie Byrd trio for several years when I was a young teen; went to S. America on a state department tour and picked up "the beat' from local players while there...taught it to Stan Getz' drummer and the rest is history.

One of the catchiest melodies of all-time. I remember when I first got into this CD around the mid-1990s (I know, I'm young) I couldn't get this song out of my head. I still occasionally find myself quietly humming this terrific song as I'm going about my day.
