A Showman's Life
Gary Allan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A showman's life,
Is a smokey bar,
And the fevered chase,
Of a tiny star,
It's a hotel room,
And a lonely wife,
From what I've seen,
Of a showman's life

Nobody told me about this part,
They told me all about the pretty girls,
And the wine,
And the money,
And the good times,
There's no mention of,
All the wear and tear,
On an old honky tonker's heart,
Well I might of known it,
But nobody told me about this part

A boy will dream,
As children do,
Of a great white way,
Until the dream comes true,
And a phony smile,
In a colored light,
Is all there is,
To a showman's life,
Nobody told me about this part

Nobody told me about this part,
They told me all about the pretty girls,
And the wine,
And the money,
And the good times,
There's no mention of,
All the wear and tear,
On an old honky tonker's heart,
Well I might of known it,
But nobody told me about this part

But nobody told me about this part

Nobody told me about this part,
They told me all about the pretty girls,
And the wine,
And the money,
And the good times,
There's no mention of,
All the wear and tear,
On an old honky tonker's heart,
Well I might of known it,
But nobody told me about this part

Well I might of known it,
But nobody told me about this part

Overall Meaning

Gary Allan's song "A Showman's Life" explores the harsh realities that come with the glamorous facade of a performer's life. The first verse describes the essence of what it means to lead a showman's life. It is things like performing in a smokey bar to a small crowd, chasing the elusive stardom while being isolated in hotel rooms away from your loved ones. The life of a showman is not necessarily indicative of glitz and glamor, but rather hard work and sacrifice.

The song's refrain emphasizes the fact nobody warned him about the painful side of the business. Instead, only the positives are promoted such as dancing with beautiful girls, drinking expensive wine, and making lots of money. He soon realizes that he was not told any of the burdensome aspects that come with this life, such as the toll it takes on his heart from being away from his family for too long.

This man is, in my opinion, one of the most under-rated preformers ever. I'm sure not all people feel this way, but damn near every one of this guys songs seems to really reach me. Like no one could ever sing them any better. It's almost like there's an unseen connection there and he knows exactly what I like in a country song and that's what he does. The first song I ever heard from him was on the radio while at work one afternoon, and he was singing that song with no title. You know, the one about the old man shopkeeper who gets robbed and killed by those boys. It was just so great the way you could actually FEEL the sadness in his voice. I made up my mind right then, and stopped on the way home from work and bought the CD, and I've never looked back.

That's true. But this song is not his. George Strait sang it before anyone.
