If it Was A Drink
Gary Allan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's hard describing a heartache
all 'cause it's a one of a kind of thing
A serious injury and a whole lot of endless pain

If it was a storm, I'd compare it to a hurricane
Oh it's even got a name

If it was a drink, it would be a strong one,
If it was a sad song, it would be a long one,
If it was a color, it would be a deep, deep blue,
But if we're talking 'bout a heartache, it would be you

If there was a full moon, it would be a total eclipse,
If it was a tidal wave, it would sink a thousand ships,
If it was a blizzard, it would be a record breaking cold,
if it was a lie, it would be the biggest story you ever told

If it was a drink, it would be a strong one,
If it was a sad song, it would be a long one,
If it was a color, it would be a deep, deep blue,
But if we're talking 'bout a heartache, it would be you

If it was a color, it would be a deep, deep blue,

But if we're talking 'bout a heartache,
It would be you

Overall Meaning

Gary Allan's song "If It Was a Drink" is a poignant reflection on the pain and heartache of a failed relationship. The singer compares his suffering to various natural disasters and other catastrophic events, emphasizing the intensity and all-consuming nature of his emotions. The opening lines of the song make it clear that describing a heartbreak is a difficult task, as it is a "one of a kind of thing" that defies easy explanation. The singer then goes on to compare his feelings to a hurricane with a name, suggesting that his experience is not only intense but also deeply personal and specific to him as an individual.

Throughout the song, Allan employs a series of vivid metaphors to convey the depth of his emotional turmoil. He imagines his heartache as a strong drink or a long sad song, emphasizing the heaviness and bitterness of his feelings. He also uses imagery of color to evoke the emotional landscape of his experience, describing his pain as a "deep, deep blue." The final line of the song brings the focus back to the person responsible for the singer's heartache, indicating that they are the source of his pain and suffering.

All in all, Gary Allan's "If It Was a Drink" is a powerful expression of heartbreak that captures the intensity and complexity of this all-too-common human experience.

This is his best CD in my opinion. Every song should've been a hit. Don't know why. No man in his wrong heart, was an amazing song. Don't leave her lonely too long. I ain't runnin yet. I'll take today over yesterday. Great remake of she loves me she don't love you. I've got a quarter in my pocket. Red Lips, Blue Eyes, Little white lies. Gone but not forgotten. .. That CD was loaded!!! Took him a little longer to get popular, and it shouldn't have
