We're the Unforgiven
Gary Numan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once there was life and we were strong, full of pride
Once we bred fear and we would take the flesh denied
Once we were gods and all things knelt before our word or died

Now we're just a ruin
We were our undoing
We're the unforgiven
Once there was life and we were vain, lost in mind
Once we bled rage unto our shame, we killed the blind
Once we were praised but all things fall, even God's unkind

Now we're a dead religion
Not one soul delivered
We're the unforgiven

We're, we're unforgiven
We're, we're unforgiven

We're, we're unforgiven
We're, we're unforgiven

Overall Meaning

Gary Numan's song We're the Unforgiven is a reflection on the fall of humanity from positions of power to complete ruin. The lyrics suggest that humans once had the ability to dominate and control other beings, but in the process of wielding that power, became their own destruction. The opening lines "Once there was life and we were strong, full of pride" are an allusion to the concept of the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve lived in a state of blissful ignorance before succumbing to temptation and being cast out of paradise. In this context, the song suggests that mankind was once pure and powerful, but its pride and lust for power led to ruin.
