Taylor began his recording career with 1983's GT, a solid pop/soul album that featured the mid-tempo cut "Just What I Had In Mind." While the album was not a hit, Taylor showed his talent as both a songwriter and producer, and was soon finding work writing for such artists as Anita Baker ("Good Love"), the Whispers ("Just Gets Better With Time") and Carl Anderson ("I'm No Stranger"). It was five years before he would release his sophomore disc, Compassion, on Virgin Records. It again failed to reach a large audience, and the experience convinced Taylor to pursue his recording career as an independent recording artist -- long before the emergence of the internet allowed independents to reach new levels of acceptance.
Over the next decade and a half Taylor created the template for a successful independent singing career through his half dozen releases on his Morning Crew Records. He also continued writing for other great artists, including Lalah Hathaway, Vanessa Williams and Grover Washington, Jr.
Known primarily for writing songs of love and relationships, Taylor departed from that mold with his 2006 release Retro Blackness, his most socially charged release that examines African American culture. As Taylor put it, the disc is a "soulful music celebration and heartfelt contemplation of a people and a culture."

Old school
Gary Taylor Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Fly away on the memories of what we use to be?
Take a moment and reflect on the day you stepped out of the box
Missing love, missing you that's what consumes my thoughts
Underneath the blue light we glide deep into the late night
Shadows in the darkness of a silent soul filled room
Body heat reacting, arms strapped around the waistline
Love is gonna do what love is gonna do
'Cause it's old school
Love becomes the thing we trust
The bond between the two of us
When it's old school love
House party up the street, gettin' ready for a midnight grind
Passions falls in the summer heat as we flow into each other
On a whim of a feeling this good, our lips become entwined
You and I embrace in a lock, meant to last forever
Underneath the blue light we grind just because it feels right
Backed into the rhythm, a mile away from home
Body heat reacting, arms strapped around the waistline
Love flowing like madness, time to be alone
I'm telling you
Love is gonna do what love is gonna do
'Cause it's old school
Love becomes the thing we trust
The bond between the two of us
When it's old school love
Love will have its way with you
Relax, be cool, it's just old school
Happiness is yours for keeps
But only when you still believe
In old school love
Underneath the blue light we glide deep into the late night
Shadows in the darkness of a silent soul filled room
Body heat reacting, arms strapped around the waistline
Love flowing like magic, we're finally on our own
Underneath the blue light we grind just because it feels right
Backed into the rhythm, a mile away from home
Body heat reacting, arms strapped around the waistline
Love flowing like madness, time to be alone
Underneath the blue light we glide deep into the late night
Shadows in the darkness of a silent soul filled room
Gary Taylor’s song Old School is a breathtaking ode to the power of love, as the lyrics describe the unbreakable bond between two people that transcends time and place. The song opens with an invitation to embark on a journey to a place where love is pure and true, and all that matters is the connection forged between two lovers. This sense of nostalgia and longing is evident throughout the song as the singer reflects on a previous relationship that has left a deep imprint on his heart.
The lyrics paint a vivid picture of two people lost in the throes of passion, dancing intimately beneath the blue light of a soulful nightclub. It is in these moments that love becomes the only thing that matters, as the bond between two people deepens and grows stronger. The song speaks to the power of these memories to sustain us through the rough patches that life inevitably throws our way.
Ultimately, Old School is a love letter to a simpler time, a reminder that despite the ups and downs of life, love endures. The song’s passionate lyrics and soaring melody have made it a classic of the R&B genre, and an enduring favorite among fans of soulful love songs.
