Blues Subtitled No Sense of Wonder
Gastr Del Sol Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Most blues are subtitled either no sense of wonder
Or no sense of scale

For example: I was sleeping
Subtitled "I have no idea how long"
Subtitled "I don't care how long"
Subtitled, why not untitled?
I have dozens of titles

Most blues are subtitled either no sense of wonder
Or no sense of scale

For example: there's a routine
Subtitled "I have no idea how long"
Subtitled "I don't care how long"

Subtitled, why not untitled?
I have dozens of titles

Overall Meaning

The song "Blues Subtitled No Sense of Wonder" by Gastr Del Sol seems to be a commentary on the predictability and mundanity of the blues genre itself. The lyrics suggest that most blues songs are devoid of any sense of curiosity or amazement, and that they're always about the same few things - either a lack of wonder or a lack of understanding the scale of one's problems. The examples given in the lyrics highlight this idea; the first being a song about sleeping that could be subtitled in a number of ways, but ultimately doesn't amount to much. The second example is about a routine, which again could be titled in many ways, but ultimately doesn't have much depth to it.

Through these examples, the song critiques the idea that most blues songs are just different variations on the same theme - a lack of wonder or understanding of the world. The lyrics also suggest that having numerous titles isn't necessarily helpful if the substance of the song doesn't change. The repetition of the phrase "most blues are subtitled" emphasizes the idea that this is a common issue in the genre, and perhaps even a deliberate choice by musicians to stick to familiar themes.

Overall, "Blues Subtitled No Sense of Wonder" is a thought-provoking song that challenges the conventions of the blues genre and pushes for more originality and curiosity in songwriting.

absolutely mind-blowing.

This song is so genius. Lyrically it's a meditation on how the blues are a predictable art form, lacking the wonder of more experimental music. The line "why not untitled?" showcases how a lack of definition in music can be profoundly interesting and freeing, whilst simultaneously poking fun at itself for having a very pretentious title. Some people might find it art-house snobbery but I love it.

Brilliant. Not a huge fan of this record (I prefer Upgrade & Afterlife) but this song is exceptional.
