HEY!
Genesis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll tell you the story
Of how my life ran
Well, at first it was easy
But it finished so hard

Hey! You started me going
Hey! I was so happy
Hey! You started a going inside me
I need your love right now

Promises broken
The things I believed in
You were so nice, girl
And I couldn't see through it

Hey! You ended my happiness
Hey! You needed my love
Hey! You ruined the world I was planning
Hey! You left it all too late

Hey! It's all over now
Hey! You want to apologise
Hey! Well look at me, hundreds of pieces
Why did you lead me on?

Hey! It's all over now
Hey! You want to apologise
Hey! Well look at me, hundreds of pieces
Hey! Why did you lead me on, girl?

Hey! You ought to apologise
[fade out]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Genesis's song Hey! tell the story of a failed relationship. The singer starts by describing how his life began easily, but ended up being much tougher, which is a metaphor for his experience in the relationship. The Hey!s in the chorus are a plea to his former lover, expressing how much she affected him and how much he needs her love. But he soon reveals that she betrayed his trust, breaking all the promises she had made, even though she seemed like a nice girl at first. As a result, she ended his happiness and ruined the world he had planned. He is left shattered into hundreds of pieces and wonders why he was led on in the first place.

These lyrics are a classic example of a love song that effectively conveys the pain and disappointment of heartbreak. The use of the chorus with its repetition of the word "Hey!" adds a sense of urgency and emotion to the song. The lyrics show how the singer went from being content to being completely shattered, which is a feeling many can relate to after experiencing a very toxic relationship. The song seems to criticise the person who broke the singer and questions why they would do such a thing. The chorus also expresses his desire for an apology from his former lover, which adds a layer of vindication to his feelings.

Why was this never on a Genesis release? Brilliant for a teenage band in '68 !!!

@melbman43

Is this really the early Genesis?

@TheBanMan

melbman43 Yes it is! Gabriel showing off his Stax/Motown influence.
A little bit of it shows off in Looking for Someone too, hidden beneath the prog and folk.

@dramatontheater

Not at all. Its obviously influenced by BeeGees.

@ThefightingCelt

As a massive Genesis fan back in the 70s , I had never heard this before until now . Obviously It's from their From Genesis To Revelation days , but frankly , It's really not very good . Very twee and uninspiring , and thankfully for Genesis and their fans , things only got much , much better than this .

@suzanne1059

Sound a bit like The Beatles.....
