My mom just passed on the 30th, also her birthday and wedding anniversary. Her wish was to be cremated, and my dad honored her wish. I wasn't in agreement because I believe our body deserves to rest underground. But that's what my dad did, and it's done. I miss my mom so much, and I believe that it was just a body that was cremated, because her soul is alive in heaven. Rest in peace mom.

a body isn't "resting" anymore as a body than it is as ash, the person is dead, it's an inanimate object at that point, there is no function, it's just keeping the body wastes more land, money and space than ashes.

One thing I want to clear up for anyone who has been wondering, you DO NOT have to have a casket encasing the body in order for it to be cremated. It just needs to be encased in something. I've known for larger scale crematories that cremate between 40-50 corpses per day to just use duct tape and plastic sheeting or trash bags then place the corpse into a cardboard box before being chunked into the cremator to make the process cheaper and faster before the sifting process etc Which is why I recommend anyone interested in being cremated to talk to morticians that work at smaller or family owned crematories or funeral homes where cremation is done that way there's more respect given to the deceased and you're less likely to be given the wrong ashes as larger facilities place the remains in identical boxes.

My sister was really scared she wouldn’t even go in the funeral without me so I gathered the courage to go in there just for her. Just know that everything will be okay in the end and I hope when you get your dads ashes, your dad is watching over you and you will have loved ones surrounded by you. My cousin is about to be cremated, he died a hero trying to save a friend in dangerous currents, he was only 20 years old and didn’t even get to experience his full life, he just had a baby that turned one month old 3 days after he passed. He was the very first grand child and nephew, he was very special to my uncles and mom because they were finally an uncle or auntie, he had a little brother which is 12 and a little sister that was 10 years old. Whenever someone in my family dies, we get the relatives together for a couple days around the funeral. During that time we go to church, have dinners out at nice restaurants, and go on lots of walks in the woods. It's a nice way to honor our loved one and pay homage to the winds of time.

He was cremated as well but I’m too heartbroken and sad that I can’t push the button to proceed the cremation. I let them do it. Both my parents were cremated. I guess I knew how this worked but I've always felt great guilt about consigning them to a fiery end. As for me, I'm opting for a green burial. Wrapped in a cotton sheet and buried on my property up north. Perfectly legal in MN. Just need to have the site surveyed and recorded with the county. No embalming so it has to be done within 36 hrs unless you contract with a funeral home for cold storage.

I grew up in the funeral industry and I have some insights to share:

1. This is why it is so important to talk about your own death and your wishes. Families have a hard time grieving and nobody plans to bury a family member or friend, but if your family doesn’t know what you want, then they end up buying expensive caskets and holding elaborate services when All you wanted was a simple cremation and no viewing.

2. The funeral industry is (mostly) honest and they aren’t looking to rip you off. But they are for-profit companies that look to make budgets, and they will respect whatever wish you have, especially when you want to buy a 20k casket that will be burned in the cremation process. Talking about your after life goals and preferences prevent your family from overdoing the process and keeping them safe.

3. Death is still very taboo in the US, but it shouldn’t be. Funeral directors have a very difficult job. They are salesmen, medical personnel, grief counselors, stylists, and officiants in one job that doesn’t pay a massive sum. But a good funeral director will be honest and transparent with you. The more you know about what you should expect, the more you will realize how transparent they are with you.

This is actually interesting and informative as on the subject of cremation, I never knew it was a process that took hours to cremate just one body. I've seen elsewhere that for four or five dead bodies put into each individual cremation muffle at once takes just 15-20 minutes to complete due to body fat, and that the water content of the human body is irrelevant to the process...

Cremation has been a common practice for thousands of years, but doing it the old ways was tricky and used a massive pile of wood. Often the body wasn’t fully consumed or it was obliterated. So if it seems a bit “industrial” to use one of these cremation machines, keep in mind the goal is to solve the consistency challenges so you end up with charred bone fragments and nothing else. There’s some videos on YouTube of inadequate traditional cremations where the operators are using long sticks to try to move the big pieces around so they burn enough so they can fit into the urn - you wouldn’t want to witness something like this with your loved ones.

Our friend was cremated recently. He still went to a cemetery + was buried next to his parents. In a plain, very simple coffin, which was no larger than a storage trunk. Never saw this way before, or heard of it. Wonder if the cremation was in a cardboard box, then? ( Rest in Peace, John)

My friends mother was buried in a willow casket made by a family friend. She arrived in the back of a van and the casket was brought to the burial site followed by a brass band. She was buried in a field and a tree was planted at the head of the grave. After, all her belongings were gathered and everybody took somethonf away with them. Everybody wore colourful clothes. It was the most amazing funeral I've ever been to. No priest, no tears, no bank busting expenses. That's how I'm going out.

I had a good friend that passed away three days before Christmas he lost his battle against pancreatic cancer I never knew he was sick cause he was always happy and patient but when I heard he was in the hospital I thought it was something minor but his wife said it was more serious than that when I got the news that he passed I was stunned it was like a punch in the gut I know a lot of people but very few I called friends and he was one of the few that’s why I attended his memorial service he had it at a crematory chapel and he was cremated that was the second good friend I lost three years before another friend died in her sleep have a massive heart attack I went to her funeral and I cried like a baby at her viewing she was cremated at the same place those two friends are like brothers and sisters to me and they are deeply missed that’s like two layers of my heart gone

August 10, 2019---Thank you for this informative video. Mom died 15 years or so ago and was cremated. We had a memorial service at a park which has a creek running thru it. Then my sister gives me a ziplock bag full of ashes that looked like someone had taken ashes from a barbeque, with little flecks of white (bone) mixed in. I was shocked as having remembered as she had been just a month earlier. Later, found out not all the ashes will fit into a urn, with the funeral director telling her they scatter the ashes on the various rose bushes around the funeral home and that's why they bloom/grow so well. Dad died Jan. 16th, also being cremated. He and his 2nd wife (also cremated) are now at a cemetery vault. Cremation is the way I want to be done, but scatter my ashes in my back yard where I have my dogs buried.

My dad passed away a year ago this month. His last request was to not be laid out for a funeral or viewing. He wanted a simple cremation and to be scattered at a later date. When he was cremated, he was shipped unembalmed in a cardboard box labeled for human remains. Once they loaded him into the cremulator and got ready to start, we pushed the button to start his cremation...and that was it (we picked his ashes up days later at the funeral home) though it wasn’t a traditional funeral it is what he wanted after all.

This has reaffirmed my educated decision to not get cremated or get a green burial or become fish or plant fuel. I’m going whole in either a family mausoleum, a cave tomb, or be preserved at home like that Asian tribe does, and you’ll notice their loved ones taking care of their bodies are not dying or getting sick and they acknowledge, take care of and respect the bodies of their families. That has earned major respect and I think shouldn’t be dismissed as bizarre or delusional fancy and keep in mind the latter are not always super rich either and that has earned my respect. I don’t believe in the animal sacrifices to celebrate death but I do respect their acknowledgment. Props to them.

I know a guy that does this at our local funeral home. He told me that the ashes are always left over and the next cremation, those ashes are mixed with what is left over. Cleaning out the chamber is not a daily occurrence, so anything left over from the last cremation is mixed with the next.

Fun fact: the ashes are a lot less than you would expect. My grandfather, who was a 5"7 , around 130 pound man (he became very thin during the last year of his life) ended up fitting into an ice cream Pail sized box.

I worked this out for myself several years ago when I attended a burial on a sunny day and I realized I would rather have some of my molecules go up the chimney as gases into the sunlight than to have all my molecules go into a box that is buried in the dark. But I do think it would be a good idea to take DNA samples from everyone before they are burned or buried.

I'm a mortician, and families usually only purchase a traditional casket for a viewing prior to cremation. Which, deeply increases the cost! Cardboard 'caskets' are available and is a more reasonable/affordable option. I personally don't offer cremation. I only do traditional viewings and burials.

On June 27, 2021 my grandpa Kenneth who we all just called Ken passed away from health issues. He was in the hospital for a few month’s before he went into hospice care until he died at 8pm . Then he was cremated on July 1. And he was only 74 when he passed. He was me and my dad’s buddy and my family will miss him dearly.

So my grandpa passed away on Monday 10/28/2019 at 10:16 a.m and he’s a military, I found out he was gonna be burnt to ashes based on the military rule. I’m gonna be heart broken on November 15th to see him be in a container as ashes, it’s already heart broken without him😭❤️

My sons father was murdered May 16th 2017. He was cremated and my son has a littler ern with his dads ashes in it. I love that my son has a piece of his dad left and not in the ground in California when we moved to AZ

Unfortunately my aunt had to be cremated yesterday. Her boyfriend told my mom, since my mom and I didn’t witness it. We’re going to the funeral home to visit my aunt’s family and see what’ll happen. 😔

My mother just recently passed away,, no one in the family had never been cremated,, me and my brother decided that we were going to cremate her ,, my moms side of the family almost had a heart attack we told them what we had decided to do,,, we also decided that we were not going to have a ceremony or service,, we are going to have a viewing of her body and they can say their last good bye along with a rosary 📿,, we also agree that we are not going to dress in black,, they are really mad at us for all the changes we are doing,, they are so called Catholics,, my mom is or was the oldest, she only had 3 children well adults now ,, before my mom passing we had buried my sister that passed in 2016 and we didn’t get to decide on anything we wanted,, they all made their it happen,, so now with only me and my brother we decided on our own way to to things,, my mom didn’t even had a relationship with her brothers and sisters ,, my mom passed peacefully in her sleep,, I haven’t even slept sad or any type of emotions,, I was just glad she went in her sleep,, no more pain no more suffer,, she was very sick, she’s now reunited with my sister and our Heavenly Father

To those asking about the casket I looked it up and it said you don't have to buy a casket but the body has to be in a medal box for cremation.

Damn, RIP Nelio. He was such a family friend for 38 years. Until May 28th, 2018. My older brother found him dead at his house. Yesterday was his Wake and today he is gonna get cremated. But the sad thing is that my older brother's daughter is also having her baby shower today and he won't attend it.

When my father died his body was handed over to Medical college in Sri Lanka within 24 hrs after his death.As per the instruction from the medical college no embalming was done.The coffin was returned to the funeral parlor.Within 2 hrs after his death, some part of his eyes removed by Doctors at the hospital and donated to someone blind.Money that we were to spend was given to poor people to buy food.

Glad this came up on my recommended as my sister died last year and due to family issues, my mum or my other sisters were not welcome at her funeral.
She was cremated and I often wonder where she is, I hope wherever it is, she knows I loved her in my own way..... Goodnight Marilyn, I love you

@Tonithenightowl Our family has never been straightforward and my brother in law was in charge of everything when my sister died- he had even instructed the undertakers not to speak to any of us, apparently all of this was what my sister wanted but none of us believed it.

For my mother's funeral. I rented a casket for the funeral. Bought a wooden one for 25.00 for the cremation. I accepted the ashes in a velvet bag to put in the niche I bought. Had my name put on the niche for when the time comes. Also had my dad's name put on the niche as my dad's are in England .

My beautiful loving husband passed away on 10/23/20 I MISS HIM SO SO MUCH. We were married for 46 wonderful years. Although I could have gotten a cardboard box I was told for 125.00 that would make me feel guilty. So I chose the padding under the body for 425.00 and did not care that it was burned. For those few moments of being cremated I still wanted him to have the best even if it's burned. He treated me like a queen and so caring. I just had to go that route it was worth it for my hubby miss him so much and forever!

I rented a casket for my moms funeral. She was cremated. I highly doubt caskets are burned during cremation. Most likely bodies are put in boxes.

My mom died on Monday 11-22-2021. This is her wish and for us kids to have a bit of her ashes with us and the rest she wanna be with my uncle her brother and mother in georgia. It hurts a lot 💔. My brother is almost 30. Big sister is 28, me 24 me and my mom have the same birthday, and little sister 13 years old. I’m so sorry about Terra. The Shih Tzus I’ve had throughout my life have been my children. My husband died 10 months ago and he’s in a beautiful urn in my home. When our little girl, C’est Si, dies, I will have her cremated and then when I died, I will be cremated also and all of our ashes will be placed together and then buried. That’s a benefit of cremation.

I watched a cremation video on YouTube where the people were brought in o the crematory in large cardboard boxes. The people themselves were in thick plastic bags and put in the furnace in the bags. There were at least 2 comments asking what did they do with caskets, but in this video the caskets were burned with the person inside of them. I guess it depends on the crematory.

Just a piece of advice, if you ever get the ashes of someone you love, don't look at them too close. It's not like on the movies, not everything gets turned to ash. There's little chunks of bone fragment and things like that. It's not a pretty sight

I worked in an animal crematorium. The process is very similar. We do extra stuff though like take fur clippings and get a paw print from the animal.

They are not 'ashes but bone fragments. My relatives, over the last twenty years, all chose to be cremated at time of their passing. I have pre-planned my own cremation at time of my own 'resignation'.
