I'm Only Sleeping
George Martin & His Orchestra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream (Float up stream)
Please, don't wake me, no, don't shake me
Leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping
I don't mind, I think they're crazy
Running everywhere at such a speed
Till they find there's no need (There's no need)
Please, don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all I'm only sleeping
Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time
Lying there and staring at the ceiling
Waiting for a sleepy feeling...
Please, don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all I'm only sleeping
Ooh yeah
Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time
When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream (Float up stream)
Please, don't wake me, no, don't shake me
Leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping
The lyrics of "I'm Only Sleeping" by George Martin & His Orchestra express a desire for rest and escape from the pressures of the outside world. The song's message is about the importance of taking time to relax and enjoy life rather than constantly being motivated to accomplish things. The singer makes it clear that he wants to be left alone and that he's "miles away" in his own little world.
The line "Keeping an eye on the world going by my window" suggests that the singer is still aware of what's happening in the outside world, but he chooses not to engage with it. Instead, he stays in bed and floats away on a stream of dreams. The lyrics can be interpreted as a commentary on the hustle and bustle of modern life and the need for people to take a break from the madness.
The refrain "Please, don't spoil my day, I'm miles away / And after all, I'm only sleeping" indicates that the singer is fully aware that his behavior may be seen as lazy or unproductive, but he doesn't care. He's content to be in his own world and let the rest of the world go by without him.

Love the song, love the video even more, but Grammys should be a showcase of all the great music that came out in a given year. I personally don't like most of the music that wins Grammy awards, but this takes away all last remaining shreds of integrity that they used to pretend they had.

They will win again next year for Now and Then! ✌️

Finally recognised? The Beatles?? Have you been under a rock for decades??? They have 7 Grammys.. I must say however that it’s a fairly average song by their lofty standards..
