To be fair, David Prowse delivering the actual lines and acting them out, as hilarious as it was, probably helped the other actors out immensely. Prowse gave them an actual, albeit hilarious vocal performance they could play off of. It also probably helped his own physical performance too. Darth Vader is a team effort and Prowse brought his A game.

David Prowse had the physically imposing build and stature for Vader, but not the voice. Vader needed to have a voice to match his intimidating presence. James Earl Jones was perfect.
A lot of people consider James Earl Jones to be what made Vader's character so great, but it was the combination of Prowse's physical presence and Jones' deep, booming voice that made the character great. Jones could do the voice yet lacked the build while Prowse had the build but lacked the voice. They were both intricate parts.

It’s cool that he actually spoke the lines, but I give props to his acting. Prowse wore a mask the whole time so he had to show his emotions through body language/movement. His voice may not sound intimidating, but he did an excellent job of displaying his presence whenever he entered the room and you can feel that when watching the movie. Prowse is so underappreciated and got so shafted by Lucas. I understand that they needed a more menacing voice since Prowse just sounded like...well...a guy. But he was never TOLD his voice was going to be removed and was not just surprised but justifiably angry at the premiere. I would be too if I played one of the most iconic villain's in pop culture and nobody even knew and wound up getting relatively little in the way of pay compared to everyone else including his "voice". I'm sure he would have agreed to it (maybe with the stipulation his name got a good place on the poster? I don't know) and they did come to an agreement after the fact but the fact that Lucas hid that from him in the first film is just so shady and icky.

I met this man a few years ago... a huge man, imposing, and strong even though advanced in years i was awestruck to be in the presence of a legend.. but wow he was so kind and friendly and unassuming he could of been any man of the streets with none of the "big star look at me" attitude.. with his lovely accent and gentle manner i went from being nervous in front of an icon to talking to a friend . . . its a memory i shall always cherish.

Dave was a lovely man. I joined his gym in the early 80s. I remember finishing a set of heavy squats; having my brother and a mate remove a plate each, from the bar, so l could continue squatting. Unfortunately, one removed, their plate quicker than the other, causing the bar to catapulte upright and continue travelling, like a pole-vaulters pole, directedly into and through the adjacent wall. I apologised to Dave; told him that l would pay for the damage, in instalments, as l was a poor student. He would, from time to time, jokingly ask me 'Where's my money?' David Prowse may get the gesture right but he sounds like hot head Anakin in the prequel, great to have James Earl Jones for backing up, toned the voice down like a real Darth who surpasses the way of Sith and becomes the most intimidating and fearsome Sith lord. To be fair to David Prowse, his body acting was pretty good. The way Darth Vader moved was part of his appeal, and the energy he put into his lines so that his body movements were in sync with the lines that James Earl Jones would later deliver - that was all David.

He had to work in a costume that covered him from head to toe and he still managed to convey Vader's emotions perfectly, especially in the scene in Return Of The Jedi where Luke surrenders to him on the moon of Endor. When Luke says "then my father is truly dead", you could tell that that cut Vader to the bone. Well, what was left of it, anyway.

In this movie, yes. But he had a bit of a skirmish with Lucas and co. in V and VI because he felt “why do I need to remember Vader’s lines if my voice is gonna be dubbed over?” which caused a lot of confusion for his costars since he’d never recite his lines, therefore every actor had to work harder to remember his lines because a huge part of reciting book is knowing your cues so you could know what to say and when.

For the record, Prowse would have had to say all the dialog during filming, to get the timing right for everyone else's lines and actions. And it probably also helped him with the timing of his own body language, too.

James Earl Jones actually chose to go uncredited for the films! He considered David Prowse’s performance inside the Vader costume to be more defining of the two of them. Prowse, after all, had to wear the big costume and he spoke all of Vader’s lines from inside the helmet during the filming.

If you think about it, this still means David Prowse was the one who set the pacing and emotional tone of how the lines were going to be read, because it still had to match his visual timing. Jones changed the timbre and mood and gave the lines more weight. They'd be good volleyball partners, as Prowse set it up and Jones spiked it.

I guess according to prowse himself, they originally intended for him to record his lines in a studio but they left england before doing it and it was too expensive to fly him out to California to do it so they looked for another voice and that's when they decided to make it a deeper darker voice.

My Grandad was chairman of a Sci-Fi club called SPACE. After he died, I found his diary, and decided I'd type it up and have it published. In it, I found he had become good friends with Dave Prowse, even going to his house to watch him in Space 1999 with his family. It was really awesome to read, and when I found a signed set photo from Empire, it felt like I'd found a treasure. I'll be sure to keep that forever.

I recall a bit part David Prowse played in A Clockwork Orange where he is the personal body guard of a man who was victimized by a violent home invasion. He was an impressive figure.

He was in an episode of Callan and threatened Callan (Edward Woodward) by towering over him. I don't remember the voice , though.

I think Lucas just wanted a physically well trained and tall actor that moved and walked like a man with great power and confidence. But the power of the sound is immense. James Earl gave the character it's soul.
Prowse performed well enough in the following sequels, even though he then knew he would be dubbed, and did actually perform some silly lines he invented himself, just for fun. So I have heard at least.

One more thing, in the footage with Prowse's voice, he makes some awkward movements. At one time he moved his fingers in some silly way ( his hands rested on his hips). But in the final movie, Lucas chose other angles.

If Prowse's voice not had been dubbed, the movie would have been a farce, and I think he should have realized this himself, and not be so grudged.

There is very little menace in an English West Country accent at the best of times....David Prowse was from Bristol. No one told him his voice was going to deleted apparently, and his other moment of fame when a dying Vader's helmet was removed was also edited out and another actor was used. I think his work as The Green Cross Code Man gave him more satisfaction....and he probably helped save many children in the process.

I went to school with David prouse’s daughter, they lived under a mile away. I can remember her being tall. If you live in England you will remember the green cross code man if you were born in 1970s that was David Prowse. His daughter was quite tall as well.I never remember hearing her brag about it I think she just wanted to stay quiet. The only reason I can think they chose him is because I think it was filmed on the outskirts of London where we lived
