I've Come to Expect It from You
George Strait Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So upset
Nervous wreck
I can't believe you said goodbye

Sit and smoke
Cry and joke
About these tears in my eyes
How could you do what you've gone and done to me
I wouldn't treat a dog the way you treated me
But that's what I get
I've come to expect it from you

A million times
A million lines
And I've bought 'em, every one

You don't care
You rip and tear
Every dream I've counted on

I guess that I should thank my unlucky stars
That I'm alive and you're the way you are
But that's what I get
I've come to expect it from you

How could you do what you've gone and done to me
I wouldn't treat a dog the way you treated me
But that's what I get
I've come to expect it from you

I could raise hell
But what the hell
It wouldn't do a bit a good

Pack and leave
My heart agrees
It seems to think that I should

There won't be no more next time doing me wrong
You'll come back this time to find out that I'm gone
But that's what you get
You should expect that from me

That's what I get
I've come to expect it from you

Overall Meaning

The song “I’ve Come To Expect It From You” is about a man who is tired of being let down and disappointed by his partner. He is a nervous wreck and can't believe that she has said goodbye. He sits and smokes, cries and jokes about the tears in his eyes. He is deeply hurt by her actions, but he has come to expect it from her. This shows that he has been dealing with these disappointments and letdowns for a while and has become used to this behavior. He can't believe how she could treat him badly; he wouldn't even treat a dog in that manner.

The next verse talks about how the partner has said a million lines and a million times she would change. The man knows that she doesn't care and will rip and tear every dream he has ever counted on. He should thank his unlucky stars that he is still alive, but at the same time, he has become used to her actions. He has come to expect it from her.

The chorus repeats the same sentiment: he wouldn't treat a dog the way she treated him, but he has come to expect it from her. He is helpless to change it, and there is nothing left to do except pack up and leave. He has come to the realization that there won't be any more chances for her to do him wrong. She will come back to find out that he has gone. The tables have turned, and now he is the one who is expected to disappoint.
