Another Chance
Georgia Satelites Lyrics

Livin' with my back against the wall
Nowhere but for
Ward to fall
Well I close my eyes,
Somebody catch my breath
Oh my lord
Let's get on board
The rides gonna scare me to death

I don't want to leave before my time is done
Don't want to stick around when my race is run
I don't want to go before they call my dance
Don't want to die asking for another chance

Come help me poor Richard
And won't you help me raise the glass
Here's to me and here's to you
May your dreams all come to pass
Cruel trick of time,
Is played in the wink of an eye
Well heaven's above you don't need no shove
The years go sailing bye, oh

I don't want to leave before my time is done
Don't want to stick around when my race is run
I don't want to go before they call my dance
Don't want to die asking for another chance

Another game of chance
A lifetime come and gone
I guess it's up to me
If I don't want to say another man's song
I want to say what grandma said,
Lying on her dying bed
I ain't been cheated, no mistreated,
And I don't have to say that yet, oh

I don't want to leave before my time is done
Don't want to stick around when my race is run
I don't want to go before they call my dance
Don't want to die asking for another chance

Another chance

No not another chance
No no another chance

Overall Meaning

The Georgia Satellites' "Another Chance" is a contemplative ballad about the inevitability of time and the desire to make the most of one's life before it's too late. The singer feels like he's living with his back against the wall and has nowhere to fall, but he hopes that someone will catch his breath and offer him another chance. The imagery of the ride that's going to scare him to death represents the ride of life, and the singer hopes to make the most of it.

The singer doesn't want to leave before his time is done and doesn't want to stick around when his race is run. He doesn't want to go before they call his dance, which means he doesn't want to die before he's had the chance to make his mark on the world. He doesn't want to die asking for another chance, which implies that he wants to make the most out of every opportunity he's given.

The lyrics also reference "poor Richard," who may be a reference to Benjamin Franklin's "Poor Richard's Almanack," which is a collection of sayings and proverbs. The singer toasts with his friend, wishing for their dreams to come to pass. The cruel trick of time that's played in the wink of an eye means that life passes by quickly, and before we know it, years have gone sailing by. The singer wants to live his life on his own terms and not have to answer to anyone else's expectations.

Criminally underrated band. This song is gorgeous, and they are fantastic - they sound just like The Faces here, but can also play country, hard rock, Beatles covers, blues... Try "All Over But the Cryin'; Battleship Chains, Hard Luck Boy.... It's too bad they came out when they did because they had no chance in the 80s/90s MTV era.

@tinaballance6266

Damn straight!

@evidence820

I was very lucky to see this band as they opened for Tom petty and the heartbreakers. One awesome show.

@johnshackelford5610

Its all over but the Cryin is one of the best songs ever written.

@WhizzingFish12

@johnshackelford5610  Love it. The redneck venom and sarcasm dripping out of Baird - anyone whos ever confronted a cheating partner knows exactly how it feels. And a tasty guitar solo to boot.

@bonkousmcnaughty4604

Dan once said at one of his gigs that he stole the idea for this from Ronnie Lane’s Ooh La La which explains the Faces similarity. The Sats were big Faces fans anyhow

@lsufan4138
