Stuck In The Middle With You
Gerry Rafferty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I don't know why I came here tonight,
I got the feeling that something ain't right,
I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair,
And I'm wondering how I'll get down the stairs,
Clowns to the left of me,
Jokers to the right, here I am,
Stuck in the middle with you
Yes I'm stuck in the middle with you,
And I'm wondering what it is I should do,
It's so hard to keep this smile from my face,
Losing control, yeah, I'm all over the place,
Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right,
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you

Well you started out with nothing,
And you're proud that you're a self made man,
And your friends, they all come crawlin,
Slap you on the back and say,
Please, please

Trying to make some sense of it all,
But I can see that it makes no sense at all,
Is it cool to go to sleep on the floor,
'Cause I don't think that I can take anymore
Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right,
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you

Well you started out with nothing,
And you're proud that you're a self made man,
And your friends, they all come crawlin,
Slap you on the back and say,
Please, please

Well I don't know why I came here tonight,
I got the feeling that something ain't right,
I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair,
And I'm wondering how I'll get down the stairs,
Clowns to the left of me,
Jokers to the right, here I am,
Stuck in the middle with you,

Yes I'm stuck in the middle with you,
Stuck in the middle with you, here I am stuck in the middle with you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Gerry Rafferty's "Stuck in the middle with you" are a commentary on being caught in a situation that is out of control. The singer expresses fear and uncertainty about what will happen next, as if he has lost control of his life. He is struggling to keep up the appearance of being happy and in control, but it's clear that he is juggling too many things and can't keep it up. The line about clowns to the left and jokers to the right is meant to represent the confusion and chaos of life, with different forces pulling us in opposite directions.

The singer is attempting to find some sort of meaning or purpose to his predicament, but it's clear that he can't make sense of it all. He wonders if it's cool to sleep on the floor, as if this is the best he can hope for. The idea of being stuck in the middle with nowhere to go is a powerful one that many people can relate to. It's easy to feel as if life is too complicated and we don't have the tools to deal with all the challenges we face.

The song is a powerful commentary on the struggle many of us face in modern life. It's a reminder that we should take a step back and remember what matters most. We all need to find a way to keep our balance and not give in to fear and uncertainty.

Also known as “Stuck In The Middle” (1972), this Stealers Wheel’s classic was co-authored by Gerry Rafferty and Joe Egan. Meant as a parody of Bob Dylan’s paranoia, the song ridiculed music industry cocktail 🍸 parties.

To Rafferty’s utter disbelief, the single, composed as little more than a joke, yet with a catchy pop arrangement, STRUCK GOLD❕ It even reached a whole new generation of listeners when director Quentin Tarantino used it in the American crime film “Reservoir Dogs” (1992).

Mr Tarantino explained : “That was one of those things where I thought the song would work really well, and during auditions, I told actors that I wanted them to do the torture scene, and I’m gonna use ‘Stuck In The Middle With You’ […]. And […] they were saying that they tried to come up with something else, but THAT’S THE ONE.”

From a sendup to a smash hit❕ THAT’S THE VERY MAGIC OF GREAT MUSIC‼️

As the Scottish saying goes, “a Dhia m’ anam”… May Gerald “Gerry” Rafferty rest in peace (1947 - 2011)… 🌹

Gerry has one of the most unique voices in rock and roll- almost sounds like John Lennon

@Redwane-Music

I always felt like the beatles when I heard gerry rafferty, I think he has some of lennon, george and paul voices all together, frankly. the sweetest voice in rockn roll ever

@Redwane-Music

and you know what, now that I came to think about it, it is actually more than that, it is his sweet voice on top of sweet melodies and chord progressions that the Beatles particularly were known of, and especially George Harrison. So no wonder he made us think about the Beatles a lot.

@lesliethompson4039

@Red Shannon Hoon of blind Melon had a nice voice. No rain

@Redwane-Music
