Take Care of You
Gil Scott-Heron Jamie xx Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know you've been hurt by someone else
I can tell by the way you carry yourself
But if you let me, here's what I'll do
I'll take care of you

I've loved and I lost the same as you
So you see I know just what you've been through
And if you let me, here's what I'll do
I'll take care of you

You won't ever have to worry
You won't ever have to whine
For I'll be there beside you
To dry your weeping eye

So darling tell me that you'll be true
There's no doubt in my mind, I know what I want to do
And then just as sure as one and one is two
I know I'll take care of you

I'll take care of you

I'll take care of you
I'll take care of you

Overall Meaning

"I'll Take Care of U" is a song that looks to offer comfort to a partner who has been hurt by someone else. The song is a collaboration between Jamie xx and Gil Scott-Heron, and it's a reinvented version of Rihanna and Drake's "Take Care." The lyrics are very simple but powerful. The male singer almost whispers to the female singer, assuring her that he knows she's been hurt before, and he will take care of her. He acknowledges he has gone through the same thing and shares the pain she's feeling. He wants to be there for her, to dry her weeping eyes, making sure she never has to feel worried or alone again.

The song's first and only verse set the tone for the entire song. The singer's opening lines suggest that his partner has gone through a difficult experience, probably a heartbreak. Then he proceeds to offer his services of taking care of her, almost as a nurse would do to a patient. The chorus repeats the same line of the singer wanting to take care of her. The bridge gives hope to the listener as the singer realizes that he has a connection with her and is willing to assure her that he'll take care of her. The song is a powerful declaration of love, assurance, and comfort from one partner to another.

The Observer Elements of the original Bland recording were used for the track "Guardian Angel" by hip-hop artist Wordsworth and "Lyrics Files" by Akhenaton from the soundtrack of French action-comedy Taxi.

The song has been covered many times since by artists such as Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Roy Hamilton, Etta James, Mick Hucknall, Irma Thomas, O. V. Wright, Mark Lanegan and Gil Scott-Heron.

In 2011, Jamie xx remixed Scott-Heron's cover, which was subsequently reworked by Drake and Rihanna and released as the single "Take Care" for the album Take Care.
Also in 2011, Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart covered the song in their collaborative album, Don't Explain .

In 2012, Rebecca Ferguson covered the song on her Heaven Tour, and then the live version of the song was included in the re-release of her debut album, Heaven.

The song has also been covered by Florence and the Machine in Radio one's live lounge

Miley Cyrus covered the song on her Bangerz Tour in 2014

That beat ... that tune... playing when you standing at the top of a hill with sun rising and the air is crisp and cold and you can see every breathe that you take... that moment of pure clarity!❤

Jamie did such a great job with the beat, it still has that XX feel to it from the original band.

@Happysundaze

Gil had a great voice and vision and humanity. He expressed it with great eloquence and directed his anger into wonderful music and words that live on inside us.

Sampling is an essential part of Hip Hop since its conception. Jamie xx gave permission for its usage and was credited as producer. It is respect, and only people with good tastes can make good music, because that's what music is about, making the best out of your inspirations.

Artistic genius and self destructive tendencies go hand in hand far too often. Rest easy, Brother Gil.

Personally, as a bass player, I'm embarrassed I'd not heard of Gil until NYTimes' article today. I'm glad I read it. I'm glad I know of him...Rest In Peace, Gil.

I think this is the Only song that has been redone 4 times and each of the versions out Amazing. In case you don't know, this song was originally a minor hit in 1959 , the original track being made by Brook Benton. It was then covered by Gil Scott-Harren in 2001, a year before his death. Jamie XX then remixed the Gil Scott-Harren track in 2011, this is the one you see here. Finally in 2012 Drake and Rihanna took this song and sampled it in their masterpiece, Take Care. Take Care is by far both's best work and was probably the best hit song from 2012.
