The Sun is Shining
Giles Giles & Fripp Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The sun is shining
But it's raining in my heart
So please come back, dear
And we'll make a brand new start

Because of you the flowers will not bloom (will not bloom)
Because of you the clouds obscure the moon (obscure the moon)
The day will come, I hope it's very soon (very soon)
The day that brings the sun right into June (right into June)

The sun is shining
But it's raining in my heart
So please come back, dear
And we'll make a brand new start

I want to hear your voice so tenderly (tenderly)
The voice that says you'll love no one but me (no one but me)
My love is stronger than the raging sea (the raging sea)
So tell me now, you hear this urgent plea (this urgent plea)

The sun is shining
But it's raining in my heart

So please come back, dear
And we'll make a brand new start

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Giles Giles & Fripp's song "The Sun Is Shining" express heartbreak and longing for a lost love. Although the sun may be shining outside, the singer's heart is raining with sorrow. They plead for their love to come back so they can start anew. The singer recognizes the power their love has over their environment, with the flowers not blooming and the clouds obscuring the moon. They hold onto hope that someday soon, the sun will break through and bring joy back into their life.

The use of imagery in this song is particularly striking. The contrast between a sunny day and a rainy heart creates a vivid visual for the listener. The personification of the environment, with the flowers and clouds being impacted by the singer's emotions, adds another layer of depth to the lyrics. The repetition of certain phrases, such as "please come back, dear" and "the sun is shining but it's raining in my heart", emphasizes the singer's desperation and the power their love has over them.

Overall, "The Sun Is Shining" is a poignant song about heartbreak and the hope for reconciliation. The use of vivid imagery and repetitive phrases make the emotions conveyed in the lyrics even more impactful.

Beautiful song. I have this album...had it when it first came out! This song reminds me a little of Geneva's "Closer TomThe Stars" and maybe something early July or Pink Floyd or even Moody Blues.

@scaligula

The intro reminds me of Fleetwood Mac's "Sunny Side of Heaven"
