I'm inspired by the rain
It's raining, it's pouring the mirror man is snoring
I'm inspired by the rain again and again
I'm funny
Can't you see my knees are all diseased
So, I cover them
Can't you see that I can barely breath in this bubble of
Dreams that I could look a lot like her
Oh, it's raining its pouring the lucky grave is snoring
I'm inspired by the rain
It's raining, its pouring the millionaire is snoring
I'm inspired by the rain again and again
I'm ugly
Can't you see my hands are all diseased
So, I cover them
How I wish that I could be as rich as her
Can't you see I'm losing sleep over sobriety
Oh, how I wish that I could throw up my vanity
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Tell me, is this fair at all?!
Can't you see, I'm ugly
My knees are all diseased so, I cover them
How I wish that I could look a lot like you
Can't you see I'm losing sleep over sobriety
How I wish I could throw up my vanity
How I wish I could throw up my vanity
How I wish I could throw up my vanity
The song "Vanity" by Girl Next Door is an introspective look into the struggle for self-acceptance and the societal pressures that push people towards unattainable standards of beauty and success. The lyrics are filled with metaphors that liken the singer's perception of themselves to diseases and the exaggerated ideal they wish to achieve as a bubble that surrounds them. The opening lines are a nursery rhyme, "It's raining, it's pouring the old man is snoring," which sets a tone of bleakness and despair.
The singer admits to covering up their "diseased" knees and hands, wishing to look like someone else, specifically, someone with a higher status and wealthier than themselves. They sing about being inspired by the rain, which might symbolize how the depression and sadness evoked by comparing oneself to an impossible ideal might also spur introspection and self-analysis. The song ends with the declaration that the singer wishes they could throw up their vanity so they could finally let go of these toxic desires and be content with themselves.
Overall, "Vanity" is a melancholic song that expresses the pervasive feeling of inadequacy that many people face in their everyday lives, especially in a society that values surface-level attributes over more meaningful qualities like kindness, empathy, and creativity.
