Knight started to record solo material due to legal issues that forced her and The Pips to record separately. Her solo debut "Miss Gladys Knight" was released in 1978 followed by "Gladys Knight" on Colombia Records. Knight recorded the title track for the James Bond movie "Licence To Kill." It became a Top 10 hit in the UK, peaking at #6. Knight's third solo album, "Good Woman" was released in 1991 on MCA Records (now Geffen Records). The album quickly climbed the charts to #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album features the lead single, "Men" (#2 R&B). Her fourth album, "Just For You" followed in 1995. The album went Gold. Knight most recent album is her critically acclaimed ninth studio album, "Before Me", released in 2006.
Ain't No Sun Since You've Been Gone

You brought a glowing love
Like a ray of sunshine
From up above
One day out of a clear blue sky
You darkened my life with your words "goodbye"
That's the day you left me for a stranger
Don't you know that when you left my life
Now I'm telling you it
Ain't no sun since you've been gone
There's a big black cloud hanging over my head
Cloud of loneliness I feel like I'm dead
Ain't no flowers blooming round here for sure
Since you chose to love me no more
I guess you know you took my sunshine away from me baby, boy
You took the life from my world
Crushed my dreams
And I don't mean maybe, baby, baby
And it ain't no sun since you've been gone
Oh, my future, my future
Was as bright as the sun, yes it was
I ain't got no future since you've been gone
I guess you know you took my sunshine away from me baby, yes you did
You took the life from my world
Crushed my dreams
And I don't mean maybe, baby, baby
It seems like night in the middle of the day
Everything around me is faded and grey
Cold are the days
Dark creeps the night
Never bringing you back into my life
It ain't no sun since you've been gone
You took my sunshine away, yeah ooh, ooh, ooh
You took my sunshine away, yes you did, ooh, ooh, ooh
You took my sunshine away, yeah, ooh, ooh, ooh
You took my sunshine away, oh
The lyrics of Gladys Knight & The Pips's song Ain't No Sun Since You've Been Gone is about the pain of heartbreak and loss. The song speaks to the heavy emotions felt when a lover leaves, taking all the light and joy of their former partner's world with them. These feelings are expressed through vivid metaphors such as a cloud hanging over the singer's head and the absence of sun in their life since their lover's departure.
The song delivers a poignant message that this pain doesn't disappear easily and that the singer is left with a hollow feeling in their heart. The lyrics convey the sense of loss and devastation that a person feels when their partner walks away inexplicably. The lyrics also touch upon the idea that the singer thought their future was bright and full of life, however, after being left, they feel like they don't have a future anymore.
