The Lord's Prayer
Gladys Knight & Johnny Mathis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our Father
Who art in heaven
Hallowed be Thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as in heaven
Give us today
Our daily bread

And forgive our sins
As we forgive
Each one of those
Who sins against us
And lead us
Not to the time of trial
But deliver us from evil
For Thine is the kingdom
The power and the glory

Let all the people
Say amen
In every tribe
And tongue
Let every heart's
Desire be joined
To see the kingdom come
Let every hope
And every dream
Be born in love again
Let all the world
Sing with one voice

Let the people
Say amen

Overall Meaning

The Lord's Prayer is a Christian prayer that is recited or sung in many worship services. The song by Gladys Knight & Johnny Mathis is a musical interpretation of this prayer. The lyrics are a tribute to the power and grace of God. The song begins by addressing God as "Our Father," the loving and merciful creator of the universe. The next few lines are an acknowledgment of the holiness of God and the desire for his kingdom to come to earth. The phrase "thy will be done" is a declaration of submission and surrender to God's plan for humanity.

The next few lines of the song are an appeal to God for sustenance and forgiveness. The phrase "give us this day our daily bread" is a request for God to provide us with our basic necessities. The line "forgive us our sins" is a petition for God's mercy and grace to cover our mistakes and shortcomings. Furthermore, the song emphasizes the importance of forgiving others, as it's a fundamental part of the Christian faith. The next line "lead us not to the time of trial" is an appeal to God for protection from the temptations and challenges of life. The final verses are a call for unity and hope - that all people will come together to see the kingdom of God.

A most incredible version of the Lord's Prayer done by Mr. Johnny Mathis and Gladys Knight.   Johnny Mathis is the greatest singer this lifetime will ever know.     Jane in Ohio

@tinascaravans

+gemeyes2 Yes, Johnny is one of the greatest all time male singers. But right now he could use our prayers, a fire recently destroyed his Los Angeles home, causing extensive damage and leaving the singer with only a few mementos. Thanks for viewing.

@gemeyes2

+tinascaravans I know about the fire..I was at his Cleveland, Ohio show the night before the fire...I held this dear man's hands as he smiled at me so graciously. I've said prayers for him...I love him so.

Thank you for sharing, I’ve been looking for this….I don’t have the record anymore😢 lol or a record player, so m glad I can find it here! I honestly think this is the best version of this song I’ve ever heard!

@gemeyes2

Ain't nobody sings the Lord's prayer like the greatest singer on earth:  Mr. Johnny Mathis.    I just adore him.

@tinascaravans

Johnny is Great, but don't 4get Gladys, there're the best soul singers, and have survived the times of change. Today's generation should take a lesson from these two icons, and learn how 2 sing, if they want to achieve lasting greatness.

@whodatsuperbowlqueen5778

AMEN!! You are so correct!

@ShirleyArleneGray1935

I love both, of them!  Johnny Mathis has been my favorite, for longer, since we are the same age.  They always sound wonderful together!
