Once
Glen & Marketa Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Won't return
And part of me wants to hide
The part that's purr (pure?)
Once, once
I knew how to talk to you
Once, once
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
Part of me has died
To watch it burn
And the heart of me has tried
Look what it's become
Once, once
I knew how to look for you
Once, once
But that was before
Once, once
I would have laid down and died for you
Once, once
But not any more
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
Hear the sirens, call me home
The lyrics to Glen & Marketa’s song “Once” depict a sense of loss and longing for something that once was, but is no longer. The first verse starts off with the singer acknowledging that a part of them has died and won’t be returning. They also express a desire to hide the part of themselves that is pure. The repetition of the word “once” in the chorus further emphasizes the idea that they were once able to communicate or connect with someone (presumably the person they’re singing to), but can no longer do so. The sound of sirens, which are often associated with emergency or danger, are used as a metaphor for the call home to the comfort and safety of the past.
The second verse continues the theme of loss and acceptance of what has taken place, with the singer admitting that a part of themselves has died but watches it burn. They acknowledge that their heart has tried, but it’s clear that their efforts have not been enough. The doubling down on “once” in the chorus now highlight the pain of realizing that they were once willing to do things for someone that they no longer feel that way for. They repeat the sirens in the bridge, emphasizing that it’s time to go home, to a time when things felt easier and better.
Overall, the lyrics to “Once” are powerful in that they depict the universal experience of losing something or someone important and struggling to move on. The repetition of “once” throughout the song adds to the mood of longing and sadness.

Lyrics
I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You'll make it now
Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
And moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
Well, you have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly, sing your melody
I'll sing along
Take it all
I played the cards too late
Now you're gone

Everyone who was part of this movie should be proud for the rest of their lives: an irish independent production with a small budget of a few thousand dollars conquered the world, and this song ended up winning an Oscar. That's absolutely incredible. It is still one of my favorite movies, it's raw, it's real.. I couldn't ask for anything more.
