Fox on the run
Glen Bonham Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She walked through the corn leading down to the river
Her hair shone like gold in the hot morning sun
She took all the love that a poor boy could give her
And left me to die like the fox on the run

Like the fox (like the fox, like the fox) on the run

Everybody knows the reason for the fall
When woman tempted man down in paradise's hall
This woman tempted me all right, then took me for a ride
But like the lonely fox I need a place to hide

Like the fox (like the fox, like the fox) on the run

Come take a glass of wine and fortify your soul
We'll talk about the world and friends we used to know
I'll illustrate, a girl put me on the floor
The game is nearly up, the hounds are at my door

Like the fox (like the fox, like the fox) on the run

Overall Meaning

In Glen Bonham's Fox on the Run, the singer laments a woman who he believed loved him but left him heartbroken. The opening lyrics describe her beauty and allure, where she is walking through the corn leading down to the river with her hair shining like gold. The poor boy gives her all of his love, but she abandons him, leaving him to perish like the fox on the run. The reference to a fox suggests that the singer is a victim of hunting, just like a fox that is hunted down by hounds.

The second verse tells us that the singer blames the woman for his despair. He asserts that everyone knows the story of Adam and Eve, where woman tempted man in the Garden of Eden. In a similar vein, the singer asserts that the woman tempted him and then abandoned him, leaving him with a broken heart. He draws a parallel between himself and the fox, which needs a place to hide to evade capture.

In the final stanza, the singer asks the listener to take a glass of wine to fortify their soul. He talks about the world and friends that he used to know, and then shares how a girl put him on the floor. The game is nearly up, and the hounds are at the door, a reference to his impending capture, just like the hunted fox.
