1) melodic metalcore band
2) ambient electronic
1) God Forbid was a melodic metalcore band from New Brunswick, New Jersey that was formed in 1998. Their style is different than the styles presented by other, popular metalcore bands: God Forbid's influences are deep-rooted in thrash metal. Building up a following in the late 1990s by touring with bands such as Cradle of Filth, Nile, and Candiria, their first full album Reject the Sickness was released by 9 Volt Records in 1999. This album received heavy rotation from WSOU-FM in the New York City area, and the band was subsequently signed to Century Media Records, releasing the album Determination in 2001. They played on the MTV2 Headbanger's Ball tour with Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, and Lamb of God. In 2004, they released Gone Forever, which helped increase their status considerably. They supported Machine Head along with Caliban in Nov/Dec of 2004 in the UK. The next year, they released IV: Constitution of Treason, a concept album about the end of the world. In 2005-2006 they supported Trivium on their UK tour along with Mendeed & Bloodsimple.
In 2009, they released a brand-new album, Earthsblood. To promote this album, they went on a tour with August Burns Red, DevilDriver and Anthrax.
Don't Tell Me What to Dream
God Forbid Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Don't tell me what to dream
Why can't you feel this? all the misery and the pain
The self-neglect, the values...have driven me insane
Its time to remember, the reason that you were named
The gallant acts from which, from which we all came
I'd rather go it alone than stand next to you
Don't tell me. don't tell me what to dream
Don't. don't tell
Don't tell me what to dream
For what I survived, no stomach
For the lies you say and do...you say and do
Make no mistake I see what is here
The emptiness of your words comes alive
The facts are evident, your actions are clear
Don't tell me what to dream. don't tell me
I'd rather go it alone than stand next to you
Don't tell me. don't tell me what to dream
The lyrics of "Don't Tell Me What to Dream" by God Forbid explore the themes of self-discovery, individuality, and the need to break free from the expectations and limitations that others attempt to impose upon us. From the opening lines, the singer asserts his independence and resistance to external control, demanding that he be allowed to dream his own dreams without interference. The song then delves into a series of contrasts between the singer's own experiences of pain, self-neglect, and the struggle to find purpose and meaning in life, and the shallow, empty words of those who pretend to know better. The verses make it clear that the singer has suffered and survived profound hardship, and that he is no longer willing to accept anything less than the truth and the courage to face it head-on.
Throughout the song, there is a powerful sense of defiance and determination, as the singer refuses to let others dictate his feelings, actions, or dreams. The heavy, driving music intensifies these emotions, underscoring the urgency and passion of the singer's words. Conversely, the repeated refrain of "Don't tell me what to dream" emphasizes the stark contrast between the singer's own authenticity and the falseness of those who try to control him.
Overall, "Don't Tell Me What to Dream" is a powerful anthem of personal empowerment, urging listeners to reject the oppressive influences of others and to embrace their own individuality and strength.

That's a poetic tool called repetition, used by even Shakespeare, one of the greatest poets of all time. It doesn't make you a bad writer for using the same word more than once, it helps emphasize it, and gives it more power.

I dig! This new idea for them to try and make Djent material is classy for them :)
