Honey
Goldsboro Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

See the tree, how big it's grown
But friend it hasn't been too long
It wasn't big
I laughed at her and she got mad,
The first day that she planted it
Was just a twig
Then the first snow came and she ran out
To brush the snow away
So it wouldn't die
Came runnin' in all excited,
Slipped and almost hurt herself
And I laughed till I cried

She was always young at heart,
Kinda dumb and kinda smart
And I loved her so
And I surprised her with a puppy
Kept me up all Christmas Eve two years ago
And it would sure embarrass her
When I came in from workin' late
'Cause I would know
That she'd been sittin' there and cryin'
Over some sad and silly late, late show

And honey, I miss you and I'm bein' good
And I'd love to be with you if only I could

She wrecked the car and she was sad
And so afraid that I'd be mad
But what the heck
Though I pretended hard to be
Guess you could say she saw through me
And hugged my neck
I came home unexpectedly
And caught her cryin' needlessly
In the middle of a day
And it was in the early spring
When flowers bloom and robins sing
She went away

And honey, I miss you and I'm bein' good
And I'd love to be with you if only I could

One day while I was not at home
While she was there and all alone
The angels came
Now all I have is memories of honey
And I wake up nights and call her name
Now my life's an empty stage
Where honey lived and honey played
And love grew up
And a small cloud passes overhead
And cries down on the flower bed
That honey loved

And see the tree how big it's grown
But friend it hasn't been too long
It wasn't big
And I laughed at her and she got mad

The first day that she planted it,
Was just a twig

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bobby Goldsboro's song "Honey" tell the story of a man who misses his beloved wife who has passed away. He reminisces about their life together, their ups and downs, and her tender, caring nature. The song is full of poignant images that reflect the deep love that the couple shared.

The opening lyrics suggest that the man is looking at a tree and thinking about how big it has grown over time. He remembers how he used to laugh at his wife for planting a small twig, and how she got angry with him for doing so. The snow that falls on the tree and his wife's concern for it represents her nurturing nature and her love for all living things. The line, "she was always young at heart, kinda dumb and kinda smart," captures the essence of her carefree spirit and infectious personality.

Later, the song talks about the couple's joys and sorrows. The man remembers how he surprised his wife with a puppy and how she would cry over sad movies. He also remembers how she wrecked the car, but instead of being mad, he comforted her as she cried. The man's line, "guess you could say she saw through me," suggests that his wife knew him better than anyone else did. The song ends with the man recalling how the angels came for his wife while he was away from home, leaving him with nothing but memories of her.

This is Dan Eidson, Frances’ husband. My wife and I were married over 50 years. She went home to be with Jesus this past January, 2022. I always called her Honey. In fact, many of our friends called her Honey. I love this song. I loved my Honey.

@averilloanthony7527

One day you'll be with her in heaven,,, until then stay strong🙏❤️👌

I always called my daughter honey. She left us quite unexpectedly, over night. Walking Pneumonia, at 25 years old. She left us a beautiful grandson, and I'm thankful for that. But she was my girl, and I loved her more than I can say.

I’m 65 years old but hearing this song ,today, i shed a few tears. It still moves me as good as it did in 68 when i used to hear it played by the DJ at a local skate rink i went to for many years. Good job bobby! Good job!

Don't feel bad or indifferent, I am 74 and still cry on hearing this gem, and, I always wonder why they never play this in "oldies" stations? Perhaps some contractual clause, its weird!

@bonniedray6696

I'm 60 and just found this again but I can't cry tried

@hkguitar1984

I'm 62 and remember hearing this on the radio.
I'm here because I just watched an interview with Keith Richards, Keith told a funny story about himself and Bobby Goldsboro that took place on a Tour Bus!
I'd never imagined those two hanging out together.
