If You Weren't My Son I'd Hug You
Good Tiger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And I've been drinking for days
Trying to find my home
I've been lost for awhile
Sinking in myself
It's time to let go

Views from the past
Walks in the dark
Holding onto you
Whatever "you" is
It's time to let go

To what could have been our smiles are gone
To where we were I'm sure we'll meet again, meet again
To what could have been our smiles are gone
To where we were I'm sure we'll meet again, meet again

And I've been thinking for days
Trying to find my worth
I've been squeezing sand
It's time to push on
Accept no complaints

Nothing sacred
These are known words
Forever speak my name
Whatever "that" is
It's time to let go

To what could have been our smiles are gone
To where we were I'm sure we'll meet again, meet again
To what could have been our smiles are gone
To where we were I'm sure we'll meet again, meet again
To what could have been our smiles are gone
To where we were I'm sure we'll meet again, meet again
To what could have been our smiles are gone
To where we were I'm sure we'll meet again, meet again

What is there but to abandon
The hope of truth

What is there but to abandon
The hope of truth

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Good Tiger's song "If You Weren't My Son I'd Hug You" speak to a sense of disillusionment and self-reflection. The opening lines, "And I've been drinking for days, Trying to find my home, I've been lost for a while, Sinking in myself, It's time to let go," suggest a state of emotional turmoil and a desperate search for meaning and belonging. The singer feels disconnected and adrift, possibly grappling with feelings of loneliness and despair.

The chorus, "To what could have been, our smiles are gone, To where we were, I'm sure we'll meet again, meet again," reflects on what could have been a happy or fulfilling relationship or situation that has now faded away. There is a longing to revisit the past, but also an acceptance that things have changed and the need to move forward.

The second verse dives deeper into introspection, with lines like "I've been thinking for days, Trying to find my worth, I've been squeezing sand, It's time to push on, Accept no complaints." Here, the singer is questioning their own self-worth and grappling with the futility of certain efforts. The phrase "squeezing sand" symbolizes the futile attempt to hold onto something that cannot be grasped.

The repetition of the phrase "It's time to let go" throughout the song emphasizes the need for release and moving on. The singer realizes that clinging onto the past or dwelling on what could have been will only hinder their ability to find happiness and truth. The repeated questioning of "What is there but to abandon, The hope of truth" suggests a sense of resignation or acceptance of the unpredictable nature of reality and the understanding that sometimes, letting go is the only option.

Overall, "If You Weren't My Son I'd Hug You" is a poignant exploration of longing, self-discovery, and the importance of accepting change and letting go.

This has been great, when the first few songs came out and I realized all the tracks were bring released like this I was a bit hesitant as someone who usually listens to new albums all in one go, but getting to digest each song week by week and hear the progression of the album over this span of time has been super cool and if done with care I think there's definitely several bands that could benefit from releasing their work like this.

I loved going through the album like this. I'm generally pretty overwhelmed with new albums when I listen to all songs at once. Usually that leads to me not liking most of the songs and it taking a while before I get to enjoy it. This worked so well and I loved every song on the album.
