Not the others, The Riddler being in the house right behind the mayor, and killing him.

I love this Batman! It’s darker, gritty, and more realistic. It’s a young, inexperienced, obsessed with crime Batman. His personality is alienated due to him being consumed with being Batman. His fighting is realistic, Batman is human so he gets knocked down too. It shows his detective skills as well.

You can tell Paul learned from all the greats before him, studied, had a game plan, and put his entire heart into it. My jaw was dropped by some of his dialogue and mannerisms. He’s helping to create a baseline standard of incredible acting. Bravo young man.

@c.v.11 I personally loved the overacting, it's brilliant. I like how different he was with the mask off: kind of an opposite to how Bruce comes out of his shell when he puts on the mask, and it hints at a more flamboyant and over-the-top Riddler in a later film. The Riddler's supposed to be a bit ridiculous, to the point where it's deceiving as to how dangerous he is. I love that they've put beyond doubt how dangerous this version is, before they leave him unmasked and probably wearing something more gaudy from trying to fit in with the Joker. Done right it could be unsettling.

I love that I loved the Riddler. But as soon as I learned Dano was playing the role, there was no doubt Reeves was going to find a way to dig out those dark places that man can go. The movie is fantastic, but Batman fans are going to love it even more.

Exactly. He looks dweeby in a way once you see what he actually looks like (I busted laughing at how he looked and just said "I wanted a piece of pumpkin pie") but then just realize how good he pulled off still feeling menacing and just insane, namely in the scene where him and Batty talk. He was insane, yet somehow a genius knowing when, what, and how the pieces would go together in his massive plan.

The fact that they made "The Riddler" a terrifying character is so good.
And for a thriller investigation/action kind of movie, he was the perfect villain to create the dillemmas Bruce was cracking his head to solve.
Paul Dano and Robert Pattinson were absolutely amazing in their roles.

I loved it too. I think my favourite thing about it is how he only became really over the top and eccentric once it was firmly established just how dangerous he is. Means he can come back in a future film as a more recognisable version of The Riddler, and still be threatening. Hell, I'd put money on him wearing a green suit simply because he's trying to copy his new "friend". It lines up too well.

I’ve heard that some people hated the ending, I personally loved it. It shows that Bruce is beginning to understand that being vengeance and instilling fear into crime isn’t the way to be a hero. The way to be a hero is to help people when they need it. He really begins to understand this when he unmasks on of riddlers followers (the man Bruce talks to at the funeral (I think)) and after being questioned who he is, he responds the way Batman does, “I am vengeance”.

I disagree that's where he "begins" to understand. It wasn't just the Riddler goons. It was certainly them and Riddler himself, but probably Selina Kyle more than anyone else. She's the one who openly questioned why he wouldn't help her kill [spoilers] because, as she points out, "vengeance" is what he is, what he's all about.

It still boggles my mind that Nolan flat-out refused to use Riddler and even went as far as to say that he's one of Batman's most unrealistic villains (well, I'm paraphrasing, but it was something to that effect). If anything, Riddler is one of the villains that is perfect for live-action adaptations. He's perfect for Saw or Seven-style scenes, and I'm so happy that Matt Reeves translated it perfectly into this movie. One of the most memorable villain portrayals in recent times for me. I guess that Nolan simply was tired of doing Batman movies back then, hence why he just went with Talia and a thug version of Bane. Too bad.

Sure, if there were a fourth film I could see The Riddler making an appearance, but there was no room for him in the three movies that were made.

I just don't see the need for The Riddler in hindsight in Nolan's trilogy. Batman Begins needed Ra's al Ghul and Scarecrow to highlight Batman's origin- how he got to be the literal crimefighter that he is and the theme of fear (bats). TDK needed Joker's anarchy and chaos to contrast with Batman's order while Two-Face likewise represents Bruce Wayne's strong moral convictions but also showcases how easily a good man like Bruce could've gone bad under the wrong circumstances. Bane in TDKR was to be the strongest opponent of Batman's and push him to his physical limits.

With that in mind, idk how The Riddler would fit in the trilogy, although I'm sure that if Nolan wanted to do more films, he'd be able to do a great interpretation of The Riddler.

This Riddler reminds me so much of Ted Raimi’s acting in “Skinner” . His overall behavior in this film; his voice was grim and peculiar just liked Ted’s. Definitely an amazingly terrifying version of The Riddler.

Reeves said he based much of the Riddler's persona and cryptic clues on the real life Zodiac Killer. And the way he talks and the codes he leaves definitely makes him a bona fide serial killer similar to how Joker (2019) made Arthur Fleck a tragic figure that succumbs to madness after society treats them like crap like most mass killers.

I loved this one scene in the beginning where one of the thugs is looking down a dark hallway where the Batman isn't there but he thinks he is so he stumbles around trying to get away from it. Even though this Batman is just starting out he's already striking fear in the hearts of criminals on a very psychological level, as if the very shadows themselves are a manifestation of the Dark Knight.

Just saw this Thu, 3pm. That scene wasn't bad at all. If at first, it felt like something out of Saw. Then they didn't show anything happen, it was only implied. The explosive going off around the D.A.'s neck was worse, I thought. Again they didn't show any gore but made it super tense. You see him struggling to stay alive riddle after riddle, then suddenly you see him adamantly choose death, rather than rat out the boss. It was jarring because that goes against our instincts as humans. You saw that subtle yet frightening switch in his decision.

@The LIM Report it’s actually a 15 in the uk. Most of the darker themes are implied rather than shown but I honestly think it still works. Too much gore and it’ll take away from the Batman experience. Also he might up the anti in future films

Dano, in my opinion, played the most comically accurate Riddler throughout all of the live action movies/shows. He's more strategic, and doesn't make as many jokes. There wasn't a comedic relief from his Riddler like in most versions of the Riddler. He had everything planned, and even if there was a slight flaw in said plan, he took notice and immediately did something about it. The movie was absolutely amazing. All of the actors did an incredible job portraying the characters.

Well I rewatched it, but the theatre was totally dead and I didn't enjoy it half as much as I did in my first viewing. Maybe the hype and enthusiasm around you affects the movie experience quite considerably. Nobody here gasped during his entry or when he revved the engines of the Batmobile.

I loved this Batman film. It was gritty, unique, and felt very real. I also loved the Riddler. He was funny in a way that made me laugh at times while simultaneously terrifying me. I didn't think this scene went too far, but it was certainly memorable.

@🐀 I became disillusioned the second Batman came to the conclusion that a rat with wings = Penguin.

That was where I started seeing gaping holes in the movie. Like how Jim Gordon somehow carries authority in the GCPD despite having no rank beyond Detective and somehow isn't reprimanded by the COMISSIONER who explicitly stated he hated and did not trust Batman AND is later chewed out by a CAPTAIN but then asks that Captain to leave the room so he can slip Batman a key to escape the jail cell...

This movie has a ton of problems I noticed on a first viewing. I have no clue how anyone views this multiple times without picking up on these things.

It's irritating that anything in this movie is considered "going too far." It was done perfectly to do justice to the characters. Personally, I wouldn't have minded an "R" rating to allow even more freedom with it's production.

I didn't think Heath Ledger performance as The Joker could be surpassed the actor who played The Riddler deserves an Oscar he brought a "silence to the lamb" element to that character. He was absolutely brilliant

The rat scene was unexpected. But I loved it. The Jim Carrey riddler was just goofy. Funny and quotable, but goofy. This riddler was terrifying. Truly did the character justice.

@hifi 88 besides I used to be more of a dc fan.
Only reason I liked marvel more was because marvel had scarlet eitch and DC didn't.
So while I do like marvel movies better I've got to give credit to dc for creating amazing movies like Shazam and wonder woman.
Shazam had a lot of cringeworthy moments but it was the most wholesome movie I'd watched in a while.
And wonder woman was just phenomenal.

I also really like that you very rarely see Bruce Wayne in the movie and most of the time batman is the one solving crime, its also hilighted when the riddler says that the real him is the one when he's wearing the mask

For me the scene that went shocked me was the situation with the Commissioner, you know if you know. The scene that creeped me out was the final convo with Batman, I saw that and said “that’s Edward nigma” I closed my eyes and could see him voice the riddler in the Arkham series very well

For me it was the D.A. at the funeral scene... stakes were already high, then Paul Dano, his voice, his countdown... enough to send chills down your spine and the stress level went through the roof. Anyone else expect Batman to be able to save him? That was a WTF moment

I've seen the documentaries of Zodiac killer, and recently weeks before the batman, I watched "The zodiac" on netflix, and boy Riddler in the batman were really portrayed as a true frickin' serial killer. idk if he's supposed to be like that or not, I didn't read the comic.

I felt like this “Riddler” was more of Hush then the Riddler we normally have seen and I absolutely loved it. I literally did not move out of seat the whole movie because I was afraid I would miss something and I have to say Robert is my favorite Batman and Bruce Wayne! I loved this movie!

I just saw this movie earlier tonight. While I think there were a small handful of scenes that could have been cut, nothing was “too far.”
I honestly enjoyed this more than any of the other Batman movies I’ve seen. This one was the most realistic and Bruce Wayne is a younger man, still a bit clumbsy with his bat tech occasionally. Cool to see from a different scope with little tweaks in the storyline instead of a director trying to re-do something.

I thought it was brilliant. No scenes went too far, I think the gruesomeness is fitting for a city of this criminal magnitude. It’s realistic when referring to serial killers.

Also, rat torture has been used for centuries. They would place a pot above starving rats, heat it up, and force the rats to burrow through any part of the body, such as the stomach. It could’ve been FARRRR more gruesome. This is still terrifying and horrid as hell, but it’s still not “too far” in my opinion.

As much as I liked this film, this was the creepiest Superhero Film I’ve ever seen. For the reason that someone like “this” Riddler could exist in the real world. As a child, I only saw cartoons and read comics, so the creepiness factor was at an all time low.

On the one hand, I really liked Paul Dano's portrayal. On the other hand, I found it to be too similar to Heath Ledger's Joker.
Ledger's gritty and disturbing Joker was depicted as a serial killer/crime lord/anarchist revolutionary. Dano's Riddler is much the same, minus being a crime lord. Again, I really liked the movie but it just at times felt like a retread of The Dark Knight with elements borrowed from Seven. Personally, I think it would have been better if the Riddler was portrayed as a former intelligence officer or ex-CIA analyst with a brilliant grasp of technology, similar to John Glover's Riddler in Batman: The Animated Series.

It's honestly perfect. Batman's villains are sadistic and dark, wanting to bring an entire city down or into their control. The rat torture method is much more realistic and capable of displaying how horrible the villains can be instead of just doing some silly "Batman tied up over a vat of acid" thing. Btw the Riddlers performance in the movie is incredible

Paul Dano's Riddler is psychotic as hell. He is a narcissist, completely deranged, genius and defiant with Batman (who is originally from the comic book character). Probably in the next movie he will wear the classic costume. What scares him is that he's the most realistic version of the character, and he may exist in real life (although there are several that resemble him in some way. Like Jeffrey Dahmer or Zodiac Killer.)

Much like Se7en, or the chainsaw scene in Scarface, you don't see anything...but you hear the details, and it's all presented so well that it becomes unnerving.

But no, this wasn't going too far...especially when you compare it to the gruesome, on screen violence in the new Dr Strange (which I was good with btw). Both characters and their worlds are at their best when they lean into horror/thriller territory.

I have no complaints towards this version of riddler, it's like saying how some people hated the joker in the dark knight movie but he ended up becoming a legend that people all loved. Like joker would state many times 'insanity is like gravity, all it takes is a little push' don't get me wrong, I grew up with the goofy version of riddler and he will always be my favorite but this one is so much more real. Showing that just because some villains in the bat-univers may seem ridiculous doesn't mean they won't do outlandish things to others in order to prove a point to the world

But then who would expect most to have ever heard of or read "The Copper Bowl" by George Fielding Elliot, which it is apparent (at least to me) this scene borrows directly from or is an homage to, describing the same sort of death torture far more gruesomely, performed on a woman. I would even think that the scene might have originally been written for a female character in the film to mimic that story more closely but would've been that much farther over the top.
As for "going too far" no such Batman villain has been written for film to that extreme, since the intentions of every film version of such a villain has been clear, even Ledger's Joker, a villain whose acts and intentions in fact are not supposed to make sense to anyone but himself. We're not supposed to see the Joker coming or know why...that is what makes batman's arch villains so scary, that their motivations are so pointless and petty, Batman himself being only a scapegoat for horrific acts having no real rhyme or reason. That's why Joker and Riddler are in Arkham Asylum. They're not common criminals; they're crazy.

Diferent from the other superhero movies is that this one is more turned to horror/thriller. This movie was amazing and in my opinion it is the perfect genre for the batman movies.
A true masterpiece. Cant wait to watch it again on HBO.
