Somebody That I Used to Know
Gotie feat. Kimbra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Somebody (I used to know)
(Somebody) Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Somebody (I used to know)
(Somebody) Now you're just somebody that I used to know
I used to know, that I used to know, I used to know somebody
The lyrics to Gotye and Kimbra's hit song, "Somebody That I Used to Know," tell the story of two people who were once in love but have since drifted apart. The singer thinks back to their time together and remembers feeling lonely in his partner's company. He realizes that their relationship was love, but it's now an ache that he still remembers.
The second verse reveals that the partner cut the singer off and made it seem like their relationship never happened. The singer is left feeling like a stranger to someone he once loved. He mentions the partner's friends collecting their records and changing their number, which adds to the feeling of being completely shut out. The chorus repeats the idea that the partner is now just somebody that the singer used to know.
The song's theme of heartbreak and loss struck a chord with listeners around the world. The stripped-down guitar and xylophone instrumentation, along with the harmonies between Gotye and Kimbra, create a hauntingly beautiful melody that accentuates the pain in the lyrics. The unique music video, which features Gotye and Kimbra painted to look like part of the backdrop, was also praised for its creativity and artistry.

Now and then I think of when we were together
I sometimes reflect on the time we spent as a couple
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
I remember when you told me you were beyond happy
Told myself that you were right for me
I convinced myself that you were my perfect match
But felt so lonely in your company
Despite being with you, I still felt incredibly alone
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember
Despite the pain it caused, I still recall our love fondly
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
It's possible to become hooked on a particular type of sorrow
Like resignation to the end, always the end
It's like giving up and accepting that it's over, always over
So when we found that we could not make sense
When we realized our relationship wasn't working
Well you said that we would still be friends
You assured me that we could remain friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over
Honestly, I was relieved when it ended
But you didn't have to cut me off
You could have ended things without completely shutting me out
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
You acted as though our history meant nothing to you
And I don't even need your love
I don't require your affection
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
The way you treat me as though we've never met hurts
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
You could have taken the high road instead
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
Sending your friends to gather your things and changing your number was unnecessary
I guess that I don't need that though
In the end, it doesn't really matter to me
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
You're no longer a significant part of my life
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
Occasionally, I remember all the times you betrayed me
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
You manipulated me into thinking it was always my fault
But I don't wanna live that way
I don't want to continue living under those circumstances
Reading into every word you say
Analyzing every word that comes out of your mouth
You said that you could let it go
You told me you could move on from our past
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know
I thought you were over that person and wouldn't become fixated again
Somebody (I used to know)
The person I used to be close to
(Somebody) Now you're just somebody that I used to know
But now, you're no longer important to me
I used to know, that I used to know, I used to know somebody
I used to be familiar with someone who is now a stranger to me

gotye ignoring what she's saying and just saying "you didn't have to cut me off" is such a beautiful detail. He hears her but he is so caught up in his own pain that he doesn't look her direction until she starts to go away and him knowing her starts to fade away. He looks in her direction, she's still there but he doesn't know her anymore, she's different, she's distant. Somebody that he used to know. She still exists in his space but it's not who he knew.
I used to enjoy this song. Something Terrible happened last year and she cut me off. I never heard from her again, the song started to hurt a lot when i paid attention to the lyrics.
It's the eerie feeling that they as are still alive but you're strangers, a person who you used to share every single thing in your life, and all of a sudden you don't even know them anymore.
I can't describe how much the lyrics resonate. "You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness" and the pain even tho he says "but I'll admit they I'm glad it was over".
I'm sorry for anyone going through that ❤ it'll all be good in the end, it'll all work out
